Catching Wild Pigs

The following is an analogy that I received in an email. I find that this is a very accurate depiction of what is happening in the United States today. I found it so strikingly similar that I had to share it with you.

Catching Wild Pigs

A chemistry professor in a large college had some
exchange students in the class. One day while the class was in
the lab the Professor noticed one young man (exchange student) who
kept rubbing his back, and stretching as if his back hurt.

The professor asked the young man what was the matter. The
student told him he had a bullet lodged in his back. He had been
shot while fighting communists in his native country who were
trying to overthrow his country’s government and install a new
communist government.

In the midst of his story he looked at the professor and
asked a strange question. He asked, ‘Do you know how to catch
wild pigs?’

The professor thought it was a joke and asked for the punch
line. The young man said this was no joke. ‘You catch wild pigs
by finding a suitable place in the woods and putting corn on the
ground. The pigs find it and begin to come everyday to eat the
free corn. When they are used to coming every day, you put a
fence down one side of the place where they are used to coming.
When they get used to the fence, they begin to eat the corn
again and you put up another side of the fence. They get used to
that and start to eat again. You continue until you have all
four sides of the fence up with a gate in The last side. The
pigs, who are used to the free corn, start to come through the
gate to eat, you slam the gate on them and catch the whole herd.
Suddenly the wild pigs have lost their freedom. They run
around and around inside the fence, but they are caught. Soon
they go back to eating the free corn. They are so used to it
that they have forgotten how to forage in the woods for
themselves, so they accept their captivity.
The young man then told the professor that is exactly what
he sees happening to America . The government keeps pushing us
toward socialism and keeps spreading the free corn out in the
form of programs such as supplemental income, tax credit for
unearned income, tobacco subsidies, dairy subsidies, payments
not to plant crops (CRP), welfare, medicine, drugs, etc.. While we
continually lose our freedoms — just a little at a time.
One should always remember: There is no such thing as a free
lunch! Also, a politician will never provide a service for you
cheaper than you can do it yourself.
Also, if you see that all of this wonderful government
‘help’ is a problem confronting the future of democracy in
America , you might want to send this on to your friends. If you
think the free ride is essential to your way of life then you
will probably delete this email, but God help you when the gate
slams shut!
In this ‘very important’ election year, listen closely to
what the candidates are promising you !!
Just maybe you will be able to tell who is about to slam
the gate on America
‘A government big enough to give you everything you want, is
big enough to take away everything you have.’ – Thomas Jefferson

Kudos, Christopher Reed!

It was with great delight and appreciation that I read on Christopher Reed’s website blog about his experience at the protest rally in Postville, IA this past Sunday.

I will share here that Chris writes that he was the only politician/candidate to be at Postville and stand with “about 75 Americans who were simply there to demand enforcement of our laws.”

How refreshing- a politician that will actually take a stand- and with the smaller group and against the bussed in demonstrators from other states! Christopher proved that he has a backbone, that he is not afraid of showing Iowans and others that he is passionate about an issue that is important to many of us.

In stronger words: Christopher Reed is proving that he is a leader with character!

Iowa voters we need Chris Reed.

What are you doing to support his candidacy?

Presidential Comparison Part 2-Illegal Immigration (cont.)

It is now time for the second installment of the presidential comparison series. In this installment we are going to compare the third party candidate’s positions and convictions on immigration. This will then conclude the first issue that we will discuss. The candidates that are going to be included in this installment include Bob Barr, Chuck Baldwin, and Ralph Nader. None of these three candidates are well known around the country, but they have the potential to make their presence felt. The first candidate that we are going to discuss is former Representative Bob Barr.

Bob Barr

When one checks out Bob Barr’s campaign site, it is well laid out with the information that you are searching for fairly easy to find. According to Barr’s website the immigration problem that America is faced with is due to many illegal immigrants and not enough legal immigrants. He goes on to state that both of these issues need to be addressed by the government. I cannot disagree with him on that point. Mr. Barr then proceeds to make the claim that our border can never be completely closed, but he does state that in order for the US to address the immigration issue that the border needs to be secured to its fullest extent. He also claims that illegal immigration cannot exist at the same time as a “fair and enforceable immigration policy”. He calls for an end to government benefits and services such as the 1982 Supreme Court decision that mandated that the US provide education for illegal immigrants. He also claims that public and private hospitals are forced to treat illegal immigrants. This is done at a cost to actual legal immigrants and other US taxpayers. He states that it is his belief that taxpayers should be forced to subsidize illegal immigrant’s healthcare. He believes that these benefits draw illegal immigrants into the United States.

Mr. seems to understand the problems facing America in regards to immigration and he seemed to understand what it would take to fix the problem. However he has fallen short on offering a solid plan to rehabilitate America’s immigration policies. All in all though his ideas far outstrip Barack Obama’s because Barr actually understands the problems facing us and the general path that we will need to take to climb out of the hole that we have created for ourselves.

Chuck Baldwin

The next candidate that is facing the firing squad is Chuck Baldwin. Unfortunately Mr. Baldwin’s campaign website does not include an issues page and does not inform people what his positions are on the various issues including immigration issues. So I would personally not consider Mr. Baldwin a serious candidate, if he was his site would have been much better designed than it is.

Ralph Nader

The perennial third party candidate is Ralph Nader. It never fails that Nader would opt to run for office again, especially after losing two elections in a row. The gut must be a glutten for punishment because he has never had a real chance to win the presidency then or now. Nevertheless he is running so I will detail the information that he has provided on the issues.

When one checks on Mr. Nader’s website it is loaded with issues, however there seems to be at least one missing from the issues page; illegal immigration. It is rather disturbing to see a presidential candidate that ignores one of the biggest problems facing the country today. But that is exactly what Nader’s website does, it fails to recognize illegal immigration as a problem facing our country.

Closing

In closing it is obvious what candidate ruled the day in this threesome. That would be Bob Barr. Now between him and the other three, I would have to say that finding his understanding of the problem is miles ahead of Senator Barack Obama, but no where as detailed as the one that McCain has up on his website. I would have to give proclaim a tie between Bob Barr and John McCain with Obama coming in a distant third. Well that is all for now, I hope that you found this post informative and helpful. If there are any questions please feel free to ask.

Hold That Happy Meal!

The sight of the Golden Arches now will be a reminder to me that McDonald’s touts that it is in the business of being “a socially responsible organization”. Selling ‘happy meals’ in 31,000 restaurants worldwide is not enough. Their Vice President of Communication, Richard Ellis, is happy to tell us that he is “thrilled to join the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce and ready to go to work.”

Did the rest of you know that the NGLCC frequently lobbies Congress on same-sex “marriage” and other aspects of the homosexual agenda? Did you know that the NGLCC website proudly lists McDonald’s, Burger King, Kodak, and AT&T among many other supporting major companies? Did you know that McDonald’s believes that in being a socially responsible organization it gives them the obligation to use their size and resources to “make a difference in the world” ?

Wow- guess now is as good of time as any to give up the fries and burgers. The pompous attitude of the big wigs at McDonald’s has just give me a SUPER SIZED case indigestion. I don’t want even a dollar of my money going to the $20,000. that McDonald’s shelled out to be a Corporate Partner and Organizational Ally and have a seat on the NGLCC board of directors.

Yet another sign of the times and one more issue to give us cause for concern. There is nothing ‘happy’ about McDonald’s thumbing their corporate noses at families who surely give them a lot of business.

“Suck it up…”

Just finished reading posts on another site with the conversation being what voters will do if McCain picks this VP over that VP.

One of the comments was this:”We’re probably going to have to suck it up and swallow our disappointment.”

The poster was referring to the possibility of Mike Huckabee not being selected for the VP spot.

While the term “suck” has long been offensive to me, when used in the context of “suck it up” to vote for any candidate that professes to be Republican but really is a RINO- I refuse, out right refuse, to “suck it up”. My values, beliefs, and hopes for America are way too precious to cave in and waste my vote on someone who does not measure up to my standards.

Values Voters- wake up and smell the political roses. The establishment is counting on us to once again be like ducks in a row, just get in a line and vote for the names on the ticket. Whether it is McCain or someone local, they are Republicans so that should be good enough. WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!

It is time for us to stand up, have a back bone, and not be led down the path for more of the same.

Parents in America have been known to say to their children in regards to peer pressure, “If all of your friends jumped off a cliff, would YOU jump off with them?”. Parents and interested others- refuse to jump off the cliff for someone who does not measure up. Join with others who now march to a different beat in politics.

Our voices grow louder and stronger every day. We are being heard.

Presidential Comparison Series Part 1

With the Presidential election only a few months away I thought that it would be prudent to compare the choices for you. Most blogs that you read only discuss the big two candidates from the Republican Party and the Democratic Party. I will go further than that because there really is more choice than Barack Obama and John McCain. On the Libertarian Party ticket there is former Congressman Bob Barr. Then over at the Constitution Party they have nominated Chuck Baldwin for President. Then of course there is also the perennial also ran Ralph Nader that is mounting an Independent bid for President. You really don’t see all the candidates thrown up in a side by side comparison. So I have decided that it if no one else will do it, and then it is up to me to do it. Please let me be clear, I am not endorsing or supporting any of these candidates for President. This is simply an exercise in comparison to help you, our loyal reader to make a more informed decision this November.

The format that will be used is going to be by the issues. I will take and issue and explain the stance that each candidate has. It is then up to you the reader to decide what candidate best aligns with your priorities. In this series of blog posts I will attempt to dissect two issues per post to try to limit the number of posts in the series. Of course the first installment of the series, the one that you are reading right now will only contain one issue. Now without further ado, let the games begin.

The first issue that I intend to investigate is the candidate’s position on immigration. Or more specifically what the candidates propose to do about the rampant illegal immigration that is plaguing our great nation. The first candidate to face the firing squad is going to be Democratic Senator Barack Obama.

Barack Obama

The first item that draws the attention when one investigates Senator Obama’s campaign website is the terminology that is used. While he does use the term “illegally”, he doesn’t tie it directly to the word immigrants; instead he uses the favorite terminology of the left “undocumented immigrant”. According to Senator Obama’s website there are three points to the immigration problem: The undocumented population, a broken immigration bureaucracy, and ineffective raids. Now on to Obama’s plan to cure the ills of a “broken” system.

The first point that Senator Obama mentions is to create secure borders. To do this he is calling for increased personnel, infrastructure, and technology at the border. Senator Obama doesn’t offer any ideas or suggestions to do this; he simply states that it needs to be done.

The next point that Obama addresses is an effort to “improve” the United States immigration system. To do this he claims that we must increase the number of legal immigrants. I would like to point out that he doesn’t say by what means this would be accomplished and it leaves one to speculate. He also claims that we must fix the “dysfunctional” bureaucracy but he does not elaborate on any real steps to do this.

The third solution from the Obama plan is to remove the incentives that draw the illegal immigrants in the first place. Once again it states that Senator Obama will remove all incentives by going after businesses that hire illegal immigrants.

Solution number four states the following; “Bring people out of the shadows.” I am not making this up, this is one of the solutions that Senator Obama offers to cure the immigration problem. He wants to allow illegal immigrants in to learn English, pay a fine, and then be eligible to reenter the United States legally. Finally a solution that is somewhat of a solution, it still doesn’t go into detail about how this would be accomplished, but it is a start (maybe).

The final solution that Obama offers us is that we work with Mexico to spur Mexico’s economic development. He believes that if we help Mexico’s economy grow the illegal immigrants will want to stay in their home country.

I will let you draw your own conclusions from this, but I know what I think. I think that Senator Obama likes to hear himself talk. The majority of his plans are nothing more than campaign time rhetoric.

John McCain

Arizona Senator John McCain is the next candidate to go up against the firing line. Let’s see what he is made of, shall we.

When one first enters the section of McCain’s website that is devoted to immigration and border security the first thing that you are presented with is an excerpt from a speech that he gave touting his attempt to push his so-called comprehensive immigration reform bill. That is the bill that all intelligent human beings read and immediately saw it for the amnesty bill that it was. McCain claims that it’s failure wasn’t due to the fact that they opposed it, but because they didn’t believe that the borders would be secured. Further down the page McCain states that his plan would be a two step process.

The first step in John McCain’s immigration plan is simply stated as securing our borders. This is actually a well thought out plan when compared to Senator Obama’s plan. McCain’s plan calls for the setting of guidelines and objectives for securing the border. Surprisingly this calls for the building of a physical fence and a virtual barrier. By virtual one can assume that means a technological fence. He calls for adequate funding of border security. The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV’s) and other aircraft as needed. These are just a few of the items outlined in the first step of McCain’s immigration plan.

Step two of McCain’s plan is titled Comprehensive Immigration Initiatives for a Secure Nation. In this step the first thing that McCain wants to accomplish is a verification system that would allow an employer to check on an employee’s eligibility to work in the United States. As an extension of this idea, McCain would also like to prosecute employers that hire illegal immigrants. McCain calls the next part of this step “Meet America’s Labor Needs”. Through this idea, McCain would like to implement temporary worker programs that emphasize the needs of employers. Through this McCain would like to increase the number of green cards available so as to reflect on how many employees that an employer wants. This portion of McCain’s plan shows that it is very well thought out. The next section is titled Address the undocumented. First these illegal immigrants would be required to enroll in a new program so as to resolve their immigration status. According to John McCain’s plan only illegal immigrants that have committed a crime will be deported. However there is one part of this plan that intrigues me. The part in question would require illegal immigrants to learn English, pay back taxes and fines, and pass a citizenship course in their drive to become legal citizens of the United States. Now the part that disturbs me is the one that calls for a system that is fair, humane, realistic, and would ensure the rights of the individual and families.

These are just some of the points that McCain provided on his website. There are many more, but we don’t have the time to discuss them at length.

I am ending this post at this time due to the sheer size. Rest assured that the next installment will compare the third party candidates on this issue. In the mean time I must give McCain the edge on the immigration issue. The main reason for this is because his plan seems more thought out. Senator Obama’s plan as outlined is more of a position rather than and actual plan. This is one of the reason’s that many bloggers and pundits claim that Obama is more style than substance.

Iowa Family PAC and Danny Carroll: Marriage Defenders

In all of the buzz surrounding the GOP state convention, I almost forgot to promote my new favorite PAC.  The Friday night before convention I attended the Iowa Family PAC fundraiser at Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse in Wes Des Moines.  The leader of this PAC is Chuck Hurley who is also the president of the Iowa Family Policy Center.  This PAC provides support for Iowa Family Issues by locating pro-family candidates to back during the election cycle.  So if you are a pro-family voter and are not quite sure who you can donate your money to who will further your cause, donate to the Iowa Family PAC because their job is to locate these candidates and financially support them.

One of the candidates from this election cycle that this PAC highlighted is Danny Carroll who is going after the seat in the Iowa House in district 75 (Grinnell area).  Now if you have been living under a rock or just politically asleep these past few years, let me explain who Danny Carroll is.  In 2006 Mr. Carroll was looking to win his 7th term in this district but was defeated in an upset by newcomer Democrat Eric Palmer.  However, this just wasn’t any ordinary defeat because Danny was one of the targets of software mogul and biggest gay donor, Tim Gill, from Colorado.

Why was Carroll targeted?  Because he was a rising pro-family star who had guided a state marriage amendment to passage in the Iowa House (the first step to putting it on the ballot).  It was put into motion to ban gay marriage and Tim Gill made sure that Danny and other politicians like him were stopped.  Gill focused on states with a threat to gay marriage, were close to tipping to a Democratic legislature, and a candidate in a swing district.  Danny Carroll met the criteria.

Tim Gill played it smart and had gay activists from all over the country donating in small or medium sums to Eric Palmer’s campaign.  Small donations would not raise red flags to anyone as being part of a gay agenda.  Danny Carroll didn’t even know why he lost until an Atlantic Monthly reporter pointed him to all the out of state checks.  Danny is now fighting to take his seat back.

Should we be angered at or jealous of Tim Gill?  Don’t we wish that supporters of the pro-family agenda were so motivated?  Were so willing to give of their money, resources, and power?  At the fundraiser it was pointed out that 94% of the gay population voted in the last election compared to 44% of Christians.  This is pathetic, people.  We have values and convictions and we need to fight for those.  Think of what could be done for pro-family candidates if we could turn out 94% of that voting block.  And never underestimate what a small donation here and there can do for a candidate.  And please don’t think that helping a candidate pass out literature or make phone calls isn’t making a difference, because it is–more than you know.

So support Danny Carroll and other pro-family candidates.  Don’t know who those are?  Visit The Iowa Brigade site to get started or have the Iowa Family PAC do the leg-work for you.  The pro-family future of Iowa and the nation starts with the 2008 election.

Politics + Protesters = Postville Absurdity

Postville… Postville, IA. A small town in Iowa now well known- not for flood or tornado damage but, according to the May 12, 2008 Des Moines Register, as the site of “the largest work place raid in Iowa history. “(Now the “largest workplace immigration raid in U.S. history.” DM Sunday Register, July 27, 2008 )

Postville with a population estimated to be 2,000 in July of 2006. The home of Agriprocessors Inc.

Much information has been in the news about the raid, strong feelings for and against what U. S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement did on that May 12 day and what has happened in the ten weeks following the raid. Reading accounts in the newspapers and hearing reports on the radio leaves me with a wide variety of thoughts and emotions. As readers of this post, I would imagine that you would have strong feelings as well. My intent here is not to debate but to point out two observations.

#1. In the Monday, July 28 DM Register article “More than 1,000 Midwesterners unite to back immigrant workers”, I learned that of the 1,000 demonstrators , which included ‘hundreds of people bused in from Chicago and Minneapolis areas’, there were ‘about 100 counter-protesters’. State troopers and police kept the two groups separate.

Okay- we would not want anything to happen with such an even distribution of demonstrators! But it was the last two paragraphs that said a lot to me.

“The Rev. Paul Ouderkirk, who ministers at St. Bridget’s (Catholic Church), said he was surprised by the counter-protesters.”

“I don’t see what the purpose is,” he said. “Why would they protest a peaceful demonstration? They must not have much to do.”

“They must not have much to do.” Tell me, Rev. Ouderkirk, with people bused in from near and far, guess your group didn’t have much to do but to take the scenic route to rural Iowa to rally for something they believe to be unjust and unfair. Are you forgetting that this is America and that two sides of any issue can be in the same Iowa town, especially when there are state troopers and police to keep everyone safe? Did not the ’100 counter-protestors’ have the equal right to express their strong views about the illegal immigration and labor issues that have been so often in the news?

#2. According to the (Cedar Rapids) “Gazette Online”, members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus were to visit Postville on Sunday, July 27. They wanted to talk to residents about the impact of the May 12 raid of Agriprocessors.

The article states that “Fourth District U.S. Rep. Tom Latham, whose district includes the plant” would not be part of the visit but he “has met with Hispanic caucus member Rep. Luis Gutierrez to give him a “primer” on the community – the history, the diversity, how it’s changed, according to staff member James Carstensen.”

According to Carstensen “Anytime a congressman from outside the state takes an interest in Iowa, it’s beneficial.”

Yes, it surely is beneficial when according to the Gazette article Gutierrez, a Chicago Democrat, believes that “the raid signaled an unwelcome shift in immigration policy.”

I seriously hope, Rep. Tom Latham, that you gave Rep. Gutierrez an accurate and well-informed update on what Iowans think about the events in Postville. I, for one, will be interested in what you had to say to a Chicago Democrat about Postville, Iowa.

Iowa and The Second Amendment: AN UPDATE

“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

These are the words of the Second Amendment, which along with nine other amendments known as the Bill of Rights, was ratified December 15, 1791, by three quarters of the state legislatures.

The right set forth in the Second Amendment of the citizens to bear arms has been under attack in many parts of the U.S. for decades, perhaps the most famous example being the triggerlock requirement and the ban on handguns in Washington, D.C. that went into effect in 1976.

This year, in 2008, gunowners and citizens who support the Second Amendment (plus undoubtedly just as many or more who do not!) had been nervously awaiting a decision by the Supreme Court in the District of Columbia v. Heller case. Finally, on June 26, the Supreme Court determined that the D.C. law violated the Second Amendment.

Although the immediate result might have caused a mildly celebratory mood among some gun owners, most are not naive enough to believe the issue of gun regulation has been put to rest. The fact that some may have considered this a victory shows how far—over thirty two years and more—we as a nation have strayed in philosophy and practice from the intentions of our Founding Fathers.

The D.C. ban was illegal and the Supreme Court decision was basically a non-decision since it declared only that the Constitution does indeed say what it says. In other words, since statements in the Constitution are by definition “constitutional,” and since the Second Amendment is part of the Constitution, it should hardly have been necessary, and in fact it was redundant, for the Supreme Court to declare the Second Amendment to be constitutional. Evidently even if you go to law school and become a judge you may still be unable to grasp the ONE/TWO/THREE steps in this logic (let alone common sense,) as shown in the fact that the decision by the judges was a mere 5 to 4.

However, most important moving forward is to keep in mind that while the Court determined that the right to bear arms is the right of an individual as separate from the right of a group (specifically in regard to the Constitution’s use of the word “militia,”) the Court also determined that “Like most rights, the Second Amendment right is not unlimited. It is not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose.” http://72.14.205.104/search?q=cache:plKlR3Pr-foJ:www.scotusblog.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/07-2901.pdf+Heller+vs.+D.C.&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=3&gl=us&client=firefox-a

Thus, although the decision declares that a ban on handguns is in violation of the Constitution, it quite clearly leaves the door open for the regulation of firearms since in the opinion of the court, regulation is not considered an “infringement” on the right to bear arms. Since the word infringe (from the Latin infringere, to break) has among other meanings that of frustrating, foiling, or encroaching upon, there may be a great deal of discussion in years to come as to the extent to which a particular kind of regulation or a particular degree of regulation encroaches upon the effectiveness of a citizen’s use of a firearm.

Immediately after this most recent verdict by the Supreme Court, lawsuits to protect the rights of gun owners, which had been drawn up just waiting to be filed, were initiated around the country— in Chicago, for starters. There is also a national movement underway to strike down the firearm ban currently in place in all national parks and national wildlife refuges. A petition has been created to inform the National Park Service that its “weapons regulations are invalid, unconstitutional and void.” (cf. http://www.iowacarry.org)

These two initiatives comprise the very minimum of action being taken nationwide, but more to the point for us in Iowa, how does our state measure up in terms of preserving and strengthening gun rights?

The Traveler’s Guide to the Firearm Laws of the Fifty States gives Iowa a “freedom score” of 50 out of a possible 100, on a par with Rhode Island (?!)— more conducive to freedom than Hawaii and Massachusetts (15 points each,) but a long way to go to enjoy the nearly 100% freedom experienced by Vermonters.

Specifically, among other restrictions, Iowans are required to obtain a license to purchase a handgun (but not for other firearms,) and they are prohibited from openly carrying without one. Further, permits for concealed carry are issued on a discretionary basis and if you are fortunate enough to be granted a permit you must make sure to pay the fee and renew it yearly or run the risk of losing it, perhaps for good.

As Iowa law currently stands, the hurdle for anybody wishing to obtain a concealed carry permit is your county sheriff. In order to be legal you must not only take a course, but pass a written test and demonstrate your ability at the shooting range. Next, which seems to be the most difficult part of the endeavor, you must convince your sheriff that you need the permit. Since the permits are issued on the basis of “may” rather than “shall, ” your sheriff must deem that you have good reason to carry a concealed weapon. The concern right now is that in many of our ninety-nine counties it seems the sheriff almost never or never thinks the applicant has a good enough reason.

“IOWACARRY.ORG was designed to create a place for Iowans with common interests to gather to exchange ideas and work toward the common goal of Iowa joining the majority of states that currently use ‘Shall Issue’ as the means of permitting their law abiding citizens to carry concealed weapons.” (http://www.iowacarry.org)

This organization’s website contains a wealth of information on the subject as well as discussions of experiences in different counties http://www.iowacarry.org/forums/viewforum.php?f=5&sid=c705bc0658d8786c577309d8799eb7fa and a color-coded map rating the counties by difficulty of obtaining a permit http://www.iowacarry.org/counties%20map.html. The website is also involved in a work in progress to rate our sheriffs and sheriffs’ candidates http://www.iowacarry.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=13930 as well as the Iowa General Assembly candidates.

Iowa’s problematic relationship with our citizens’ constitutional right to bear arms doesn’t stop with our local sheriffs. By now I am sure almost everybody has heard Tom Harkin in his own voice and unfortunately unforgettable words express his twisted desire to take all the guns in the U.S. and put them on a ship and sink them to the bottom of the ocean. Unbelievable that this is our U.S. Senator since 1984 ( and before that he was ten years as the U.S. Representative for Congressional District Five,) unbelievable that this is the man who is supposed to be our mouthpiece and standing up for our rights in Washington, D.C.

Fortunately we now have someone who looks to be an excellent replacement for Senator Harkin; in fact many are hopeful that he can ” take Tom Harkin out.” This candidate for the U.S. Senate is Republican Christopher Reed of Solon who cautions, among other statements on his website http://www.christopherreed2008.com/, something similar to what I wrote above:

“It is ridiculous that the government would force vulnerability on its own citizens. Tom Harkin supported this gun ban for 32 years, while Washington, D.C., gave an ugly advantage to criminals. This is only one of several examples of Harkin whistling while constitutional freedoms are seized…The Tom Harkins of the world aren’t just going to go away. They will come back with another scheme to chip away at the Constitution.”

Indeed, stay alert— there is a lot of work to be done in Iowa.

Oh Really, Mary Lundby?!?

Delivered to my door via The (Ames) Tribune: “Party veterans: GOP stresses social issues too much.”

Well, that got my skimming the news down to actually reading an entire article. It was well worth my time.

According to Mary Lundby, former Iowa Senate Republican leader, many GOP voters in Iowa are more worried about the economy and energy prices than they are about social issues including abortion or gay rights.

Lundby also asserts that the state party’s central committee has given a short shrift to other topics in favor of social issues and that could turn off voters. “Voters have got so many other issues on their minds, and when you only coalesce on those (social) issues, you lose those voters in the chatter, and we can’t afford that.” Lundby also states that the central committee has lost touch with the rank-and-file voters and her hopes for Republicans to retake the Iowa House this fall have faded.

News Flash, Mary Lundby: Long before Scheffler and Lehman took on the leadership of the Republican National Committee, you were losing voters like me. I must be a wonder-voter: I am concerned about social issues AND economy and energy prices. I am concerned that people like you have not cared about what I think. So, don’t go about trying to scare people from voting republican. The same article that quotes you also goes on to say that prior to this year religious conservatives comprised around 35-40 percent of Republican caucus turnout, but that polls this year indicated that proportion jumped to around 60 percent. (These stats from Dennis Goldford, professor of politics at Drake University.)

Personally, my hopes for Republicans to retake the Iowa House have not “faded”- they are alive and well as many more people like me are wonder-voters who care about the big picture and are working with time, money, and devotion to an important cause – electing candidates who share our vision about Iowa and America.

Iowa can’t afford more years of the women and men that we elect, thinking they represent our values and concerns, not working to get the job done or voting with disregard to what their constituents want. We demand action and we want it sooner not later. Some have ‘lost touch’ and it is not the large percent of Republican caucus voters and state convention delegates. There was a big message sent- the question is, Mary Lundby, why did you not hear it?
