A choice for District 45 State Representative
September 28, 2008 5 Comments
Information about Beth Wessel-Kroeschell was placed in my door and a paragraph on the flier managed to catch my attention.
“I led the effort to strengthen Iowa’s civil rights laws to protect all Iowans from discrimination in housing, education and employment.”
Hmmm- civil rights laws.
My searching found that civil rights really means what Wessel-Kroeschell did to help pass Iowa State File 427. Among the articles I found on-line was one from the Globe Gazette, April 25, 2007.
“Rep. Beth Wessel-Kroeschell, D-Ames, who guided the bill through debate, said it was about human dignity.
She said as policy makers, legislators have a duty to protect people who are discriminated against simply because of whom they love.
“This is not about special protections or rights; it is about ending discrimination,” Wessel-Kroeschell said.
She called civil rights for gays an economic growth issue, citing an exodus from the state of bright young people. She argued that places that are tolerant and open to new ideas are places that grow.”
Many Ames voters may agree with their current District 45 State Representative.
Other people have a different spin on the issue of gay rights- as in the more gay rights are promoted, tolerated, and encouraged, the more we go down the path to recognizing gay marriage.
As Election Day approaches we need to pay close attention to information shared by candidates.
Perhaps many voters, especially in liberal Ames, Iowa, will not find fault in Wessel-Kroeschell’s strong support of her version of civil rights. Fine- that is their choice.
But for those who have a different perspective on gay (civil) rights there is another choice to vote for this in this election. Ryan Rhodes offers an alternative to the liberal views of Wessel-Kroeschell. Ryan is a voice for conservative, family values.
If you are looking for “a change”, please do check out Ryan Rhodes, Republican, and give him your consideration.
I have read the argument before that now more people will want to come to Iowa because of its “forward thinking” with this law. Ha ha. Did CA and MASS population boom when they allowed same sex marriage? No. Don’t think so. Anyway, politicians are lying to you if they say they passed this bill just to end discrimination. It was passed in order to be used as a stepping stone to ensure a future of gay rights. Come on, Ames, wake up. Ryan Rhodes will not get caught up in this agenda. Vote for Rhodes.
Glad the people of District 45 have such a good choice with Ryan Rhodes. There would be some hope in getting back to family values with his input in the state house.
I live in House District 45 and thought I would give you my input.
Ryan Rhodes is VERY young.
I emailed Ryan Rhodes at the address listed on his website, it was sent back to me as undelieverable.
Ryan Rhodes has absolutely no experience, none at all. He has not worked in any government position at all, not at any level.
He did not even live in Ames, until he came here to go to college.
I dont even need to mention his role in the Veshia riots as anyone who can Google “Ryan Rhodes” can find it out for themselves.
I am a Republican and for protecting the sanctity of marriage, but to elect someone with no experience who is old enough to be grandson doesnt make much sense to me
“Greg”… your post gives me concern that you really are a Republican, out to protect the sanctity of marriage, etc.
But, since I can’t really know what motivated your response to Ryan Rhodes I can only say a few more things about Ryan.
Yes, he is young and that is exactly why I support him. It is time for new blood and it may as well be a Republican representing District 45!
Ryan has worked ever so hard to get the vote out. He is dedicated to his campaign and the beliefs that he has on important issues.
Yes, he is new to Ames…. and how many people are also new to Ames??? A lot! Is that a reason to not support someone? New people move to Ames all the time.
And, your Veshia comments were… well, very uncalled for.
Ryan was a student and his comments did appear in the paper but certainly not in the context you portray. Ryan helped with the event the next year- something ISU would not have allowed if he had been in any way part of the problem the year before.
Your post sells Ryan short for the quality of candidate that he is.
I doubt anything I say will influence your heart/mind so my response to you is more to encourage others to find the opportunity to meet Ryan and judge for themselves.
I did not find the problems with Ryan’s website that you have stated. Perhaps you will try again and give Ryan a kinder benefit of the doubt.
Ryan is an awesome person and a great candidate. I have plans to attend his victory party on Nov. 4.
Yes, Ryan is young, but so are a lot of the GOP candidates out there this year and that is refreshing! I couldn’t believe after meeting some of these candidates at convention how many of them were in their 20s and early 30s. We are in a generational changeover in the Republican party. It had to happen sometime……..why not now? As far as Ryan’s experience goes, are you willing to elect someone back into office who holds none of your conservative ideals or are you ready to take a chance on someone new who will fight for traditional Republican issues? Experience can be gained, convictions we are born with. Ryan has the right convictions and the experience will follow soon after.
