Dr. Coburn Says a Financial Stabilization Plan is Necessary

Says political greed in Congress is root of the problem

September 29, 2008

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – U.S. Senator Tom Coburn, M.D. (R-OK) released the following statement today regarding a financial stabilization plan Congress is expected to consider this week:

“Taxpayers deserve to know that there is no guarantee this plan will work, but there is a guarantee that we will face a financial catastrophe if we do nothing. If banks continue to fail and stop lending the average American could lose their job, be unable to secure a loan for a car, home or college education, and find their life savings and retirement in jeopardy. Our economy depends on having liquid assets available for credit and lending just as an automobile engine needs oil. If those liquid assets stop flowing, our economy will be seriously damaged and will require far more costly and lengthy repairs.”

“This bill does not represent a new and sudden departure from free market principles as much as it represents an emergency response to congressional actions that have ignored free market principles, and our Constitution, for decades. If anyone in Washington should offer their resignation it should be the members of Congress who peddled the fantasy of free home ownership without risk. No institution in our country is more responsible for the myth or borrowing without consequences than the United States Congress.”

“As much as members of Congress want to find scapegoats, the root of this problem is political greed in Congress. Members of Congress from both parties wanted short-term political credit for promoting home ownership even though they were putting our entire economy at risk by encouraging people to buy homes they couldn’t afford. Then, instead of conducting thorough oversight and correcting obvious problems with unstable entities like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, members of Congress chose to ignore the problem and distract themselves with unprecedented amounts of pork-barrel spending.”

“Taxpayers who want to ensure that this doesn’t happen again should send a very clear message to Washington that it’s time for Congress to live within its means and restore the principles of limited government and free markets that made this country great. I will do everything in my power to ensure that this bill does not lead us down a slippery slope of European style socialism and slow economic growth. I will also promise taxpayers that I will do everything in my power to block what I expect will be hundreds of attempts by politicians in Washington to continue business-as-usual borrowing and spending in the next Congress. In a time of crisis, American families have to make hard choices between budget priorities. So should Congress. If politicians want to create new programs they should eliminate duplicative programs or reduce funding for less important programs. The only way we can put this crisis behind us is for Congress to rejoin the real world of budget choices and consequences which, as we have seen in recent days, can be ignored for only so long.”

Iowans can you see where Tom Harkin has gotten us during his time as our Senator?  When we elect Christopher Reed he will work to make sure the next six years won’t be spent dishing out the pork and making Americans suffer the consequences of greed. Chris Reed will not ignore our Constitution. We need Reed now more than ever!

Express Your Anger

I am sure that you have heard the news by now, the US Senate passed its own pork laden version of the bailout bill last night. Of course they aren’t calling it a bailout bill; no they are terming it a rescue plan. What the Senate did last night was vote to add even more debt to future generations of Americans. And in the process they have shown a spectacular disregard for the wishes of the general population.

When the leaders of both parties figured out that there was not enough support for this bill on it’s own they decided to sweeten the deal with expenditures for various Senators pet projects. This pork barrel spending includes such necessities as tax breaks for the makers of children’s wooden arrows. Another must have is tax break for litigants of the Exxon Valdez spill. I mean come on, we are in a financial crisis here, the country is deeply in debt, and the leaders of our country want to billions more to bailout Wall Street firms that handed out bad loans to people across the country. They want to bailout corporations whose board of executives designed executive pay packages to include a “golden parachute” for executives, even if they fail miserably. They want to bailout corporations that may have fraudulently cooked their books so their execs could siphon away more of the profit for personal use. These are the guys that you want us, the every day American, to save. I am sorry, that is the wrong answer. These legislative leaders are as out of touch as the corrupt executives are.

When our forefathers set up this country I am sure that they foresaw a time when the government would become blind to the needs of the people. So it is now up to the people of the United States. Are we going to continue to elect these politicians that regularly and completely disregard the will of the people, or will we vote for a real honest to goodness change. A change that will bring back the days when the will of the people are followed.

This year there is not much that we can do with Senator Grassley other than voice our displeasure with him and his vote. Senator Harkin on the other hand is in a reelection bid against Republican challenger Christopher Reed. To deliver a message to Congress and the White House we need to defeat all incumbents that voted for this corporate welfare bill. That means that we need to vote for Christopher Reed. Reed is a very plain spoken man that truly wants to go to Washington to do the will of the people. He wants to be the extension of the people of Iowa, the place where they can go when their voice isn’t being heard in the halls of Congress. And this is one of the many reasons that I will cast my vote for Christopher Reed on November 4th. It is time to express our anger and disappointment with Congress at the ballot box.

Where are you, Iowa GOP?

I have been wondering, where are you Iowa GOP? What are you doing to support Christopher Reed to take out Tom Harkin so that Reed will be our new, bright, and conservative Senator?

Let me tell you why I have the courage to ask.

For months now I have been the grass roots for Reed…. blogging, donating, attending his events, telling my friends and neighbors about him. Yes, I have a sign in my yard and a bumper sticker on my car.

I am not asking YOU when I have been sitting around and doing nothing.

If you are doing something then be clear about your efforts. Get the word out. I urge you to let us, the humble voters, know. I urge you to do more. Time wasting. Conservative voters who have done their homework know that Chris Reed is the best choice. It’s time to convince the undecided voters.

The grass roots needs your leadership, voice, and yes, money!

Harkin and Grassley…”Oink-Oink” and the YES vote

Well, they did it. Iowa’s Harkin and Iowa’s Grassley. They voted YES on the bailout/rescue bill. The bill meant to buy up assets to help out Wall Street to Main Street- to make taxpayers money in the end, to relieve the credit crisis.

The bill filled with sweeteners and give tax breaks for special interests.

As someone on T.V. said this A.M.: “Oink-Oink!!!”  What a fitting description.

Where is the accountability? For me, it will be when Christopher Reed is elected and goes to Washington, D.C. He is our hope for breaking this cycle of lard, sweeteners, and caving into special interests. Enough. Iowa voters- we need Christopher Reed. Harkin has to go!!!  We need this man to represent us, who will look for new solutions and reflect the wishes of the voters.

In an article by Geoff Elliott:  ”Many voiced disdain for the extra tax breaks the Senate added to the financial-rescue package.

They ranged from a one-year fix to prevent the alternative-minimum tax from hitting more taxpayers to extending the research credit for business to allowing rural utilities to issue tax-exempt bonds for use of renewable energy.

Also included were more obscure terms extending tax breaks for motor-sports racing tracks, makers of wooden arrows for children, and the rum excise tax for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

The tax breaks added to the Senate bill would cost the Treasury an estimated $110 billion over 10 years, according to Congress’ Joint Committee on Taxation.

“It’s garbage,” said Republican Devin Nunes. “They’re trying to put more decorations on the Christmas tree, but the problem is the Christmas tree.”

Stay tuned, we will get to see what the House will do with the pork, the Christmas tree, and taxpayer’s money.
