Steve King again highlights importance of the FairTax
February 26, 2009 13 Comments
It’s been a rather glum political life these past few days with enduring continual President Obama news, Mrs. Obama news, upcoming First Dog news, and learning about what Democrats in Iowa are pushing upon voters/taxpayers to name a few.
How happy I was to find news from Representative Steve King. King’s words about the FairTax are welcome. We need more people than Mike Huckabee to push for a much needed change in our tax structure.
So, it is with delight that I share a portion of what Mr. King had to say following Obama’s latest speech:
“Eliminating the income tax, removing taxes on production and enacting the FairTax – a national sales tax – would grow the private sector and create new, good-paying jobs. Enacting the FairTax will put American taxpayers back in control and jumpstart our economy.”
Here is a good video of King on Fox talking about the FairTax…
At a time of rapidly falling consumer spending, it is pretty bizarre for King to propose a 30% sales tax.
What would that do for consumer spending?
By eliminating the taxes, the cost of goods will go down. The consumer will actually come out ahead.
What does increasing the tax on either income or sales do for spending in a time where no one is buying?
The Fair Tax calls for removal of the (what should be illegal) income tax.
Think of it. Getting a 36% pay raise (removal of the income tax) and being able to choose how much tax you pay a year by choosing what you buy. The best part about it is it would actually provide transparency into the spending practices of our government unlike the current system which unfairly burdens certain groups of people with high tax percentages than others.
I think that Sales tax is also prone to problems.. It isn’t flawless but it doesn’t take much to be better than the current income tax system.
So, taco, are you saying you are in the 36% tax bracket? Can you spare a dime?
Even if you are in the top bracket there is NO WAY you can get a raise that size by ending the income tax.
This is another case of economic illiteracy at this blog.
Jerry,
With the FairTax the citizen’s of the US are the ones that would finally be able to choose how much they pay in taxes. It would free us up from the oppressive income tax and it would subject those that are currently exempt from income taxes but still use our infrastructure (tourists, diplomats for example). The FairTax would surely be the first tax system in our country that is truly fair where the people would be the ones deciding how much they pay in taxes.
I would have figured you as a proponent because the amount of taxes is directly proportional to how much one spends. So the rich who have a penchant to spend more than the middle class would pay more in taxes.
Abregar,
I think it’s glib to say people get to decide how much tax they pay by deciding whether to spend. Poor people spend all their money. Rich people spend some of it but may spend it on trips to the Orient or on other untaxed things like stocks. So they could avoid taxes by taking trips to Cancun, while foreigners would also quit coming to Vegas or NYC. They could go to Cancun or the Riviera instead.
Will the tax cover gasoline? How can people who oppose the gas tax hike also favor the FairTax? The dynamic is the same–only the consumers pay.
Furthermore, Abregar,
The gas tax hits visitors to Iowa the same as the Fair Tax would hit visitors to the USA. I’ve heard a quarter or more of the tax would be raised from out-of-state drivers. Surely you support the gas tax now.
You can’t back the Fair Tax and oppose the gas tax. OTOH, I CAN back the gas tax and not the UNfair tax for this reason. The gas tax hike is a minor change to the system. Your UnFair Tax is a radical change that is based on hidden assumptions about who can spend and who will save.
Jerry, I guess you just know it all. We will just defer to you from now on because you know what is best for us and the country. Maybe start your own blog.
Last I knew the ‘poor’ didn’t buy yachts, multiple houses, multiple new cars and play cars, and the like.
So what you are saying is that the poor shouldn’t have any tax burden and the rich should cannot have the choice?
As to your point with people leaving the country. That is exactly me point. It would be transparent to see just how wildly out of control our country is spending money and people would take action of either leaving the country or fixing it (sounds like the best solution to me).
I think you just proved my point..
As for the gas tax , I oppose it because taxes should be on everything or nothing. The gas tax suffers from the same problem as the cigarette tax to pay for whatever program Iowa just tried to do. People stopped smoking and less money was brought into the fund. (oooops).. My solution. Put everything in the budget and stop making new taxes for specific programs. This would also bring about ethical accounting. (this is something I agree with Obama on, I’m glad he put the war in the budget (if it is honestly here[separate issue]).
Jerry- I have read your comments and have decided to waste my time to tell you that those who post on Iowa Defense do so because we actually care about America. We care about what Obama and the Liberals are doing in America and in Iowa to take our Country down a terrible path.
I want my children and their children to know that I, callmecrusader, had a voice and attempted to use my time and influence to make my concerns heard via the internet and connections with other like-minded people.
The “Radical Change” America is experiencing with Obama as President pales in comparison to what the FAIRtax would do to help make life more fair for many.
Jerry needs to go to FairTax.org and learn about the plan before he makes wild accusations on what we should and should not be for.
The FairTax solves so many problems it is a no-brainer.
And Jerry – I’ve never known someone so in love iwth the current tax system…it really boggles my mind.
CDaily~ Thanks for your input to this post and thanks for helping to enlighten Jerry. Perhaps you will have some success.
The sooner the better for the FAIRtax!
