Tom Harkin is in the news. One take on what he has been doing has been communicated in various news articles, including the one here that appeared in Reuters.
I share a portion of the article below.
The U.S. Agriculture Department would be given the power to regulate all food sold in schools — including vending machine snacks — when Congress renews child nutrition programs, the chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee said on Tuesday.
Chairman Tom Harkin said he hopes the committee will start work on legislation to reauthorize school lunch programs in October or November, with a goal to conclude the work by the end of the year.
I found out about what our Tom was doing with the U.S.D.A. and the “power” given to control school vending machines in an interesting way- via the 7-09-09 Mark Levin Show.
Here is how Levin describes how our Tom Harkin is going to take power to regulate all food sold in schools:
“The detestable leftist Tom Harkin of Iowa… the freakish looking Left Wing Moran from Iowa who lies about his Viet Nam record- he’s going to be in charge of what foods are in your vending machine…he’s a crack pot- he’ll decide what your kids eat…you’re too stupid, your community is too stupid, your kids are too stupid…Tom Harkin’s going to decide. Celery for everybody- enjoy!”
Wow- I wonder how many people all over the U.S.A. now have a clearer understanding of what many Iowans already know about Tom? Levin has Harkin’s liberal number!
And Harkin seems to be everywhere. Today his quotes about the Health Care Bill were being played hourly on WHO news.
But, back to the USDA overseeing school snack food. I understand that there is cause for concern about obese children in America. Yes, we need to be concerned. We DO NOT need the Federal Government taking control over issues that can be handled locally. Harkin is assisting with the power grab by the government.
Levin says that “nothing is too small to be regulated.” This includes what is sold in school vending machines.
And then there is the Obama administration, which according to the Reuters article, has a goal of eliminating childhood hunger by 2015, with a “proposed $1 billion a year increase in child nutrition programs but has provided few details of how it would spend the money.”
Harkin says he is busy with his “work on health care reform and on drafting the annual federal spending bills.”
Remember this Iowans- Harkin is out to take control of our lives, spend our money, and keep his name in the news. At least I can proudly say that I did not vote to send him back to Washington, D.C. so that he could continue with his liberal, leftist ways.

I can remember the war on poverty started by President Johnson in the 1960s and here we are now in 2009 and there are probably more in the poverty level than there was then. That really worked out well didn’t it ?! We have spent trillions on this and got no where. I have not liked Harkin for along time. Its sad i listen to Mark Levin quite often and it bothers me that he slams Iowans for continuing to send this man back to the Senate. Guess kids will be taking a sack lunch to school soon if they want something other than carrots and celery and lettuce. We had good meals when i went to school and there was very few over weight kids. This really boomed i feel with the invention of the home game systems like Atari and Nintendo and Sega and on and on. Not to mention the addition of 100+ channels and 24 hour a day cartoons.
It goes beyond video games. When I was in school, the town kids walked. Now the school bus stops in town less than half a mile from the school to pick up kids! And all sixteen year olds have their own car to drive the 1000 feet to school. Let’s get Harkin on those problems, too!
I know the only thing these Senators and any congressman or woman want is to stay in power and have the biggest chunk of the pie and lime light on the news it strokes their ego’s. Well im sick and tired of egos i want some action to reign in spending. It will be reigned in soon when our dollar isn’t worth a plugged nickel. I remember how we used to make fun of Canada’s money not being worth much they will be making fun of us soon and Mexico to. Your dollar isn’t worth a peso’s ass. I can hear them now.
Amen. Just look at the Sotomayor hearings—all ego-driven speeches by camera-loving Senators.
