Tom Shaw a Iowan to be proud of!

This past Saturday i got to meet Tom Shaw a U.S.  Navy veteran who is running  Independently for Iowa House of Representatives District 8.  An Independent Choice to Represent your voice. He sat down with a group of us from IDA and told us why he decided to run and what he stands for. I found him to be one of the most down to earth persons running for office i have met in a long time.  I can’t say that enough specially when very few politcians have the time of day for us. I like a person who takes time out and make a 8 hour drive to sit down with people and talk about issues thats concerning them.  Not just a cheap  handshake and say vote for me cause i am gonna promise you everthing and come through with nothing for you but what i do come through with you will pay for along time. The people who are representing us now i feel have lost so much touch with the people  in their districts its not funny. They are so concerned at maintaining outside Iowa interests they have ignored the people of Iowa that they represent. Once they get elected its on to their own agenda and to heck with the things that needs fixed until they can’t be ignored anymore. They keep enlarging the government and budget in Iowa yet they ignore the fact its well more than the state brought in. Tom is like me in ways, hes fed up with the way Iowa  has been run and is gonna  to do something about it.

I believe that if District 8 elects Tom Shaw they will have someone that will be there fighting to protect their rights and will have someone their district can count on. He knows Iowa can’t continue to keep up their reckless spending. He is tired of rural Iowans being ignored by our representives to represent outside the state activists and lobbyists. He stands for traditional values that are being erroded and lost and pledges to defend Iowa and restore and maintain our rights. I enjoyed our time with Tom and wish we had a person in our district who would take time to visit people in their districts and see and hear from Iowans what they are tired and fed up with and what concerns them. He plans on going  door to door to meet with people of  District 8 so you should be prepared for a knock on your door from a Iowan that cares and is tired of way things are going. It was a pleasure meeting with Tom.  Thanks Tom for taking time  to meet with us  and i look forward to you defending Iowans soon.

BVP on Culver: “Hope and Wait” Policies

Bob Vander PlaatsThe primary that will decide the Republican nominee to challenge Governor Chet Culver is still eleven months away. That didn’t stop The Iowa Republican from commissioning a poll to determine who the frontrunner is at this early date. As I had predicted last month Bob Vander Plaats is the clear frontrunner in the race for the Republican Gubernatorial nomination. In fact Vander Plaats is clearly dominating the rest of the field by more than thirty percent. In the wake of this poll I had the opportunity to have a conversation with Vander Plaats. During the interview he very clearly took aim at Culver and never let up.

Vander Plaats clearly articulated that there will be many issues in play over the next year and a half, but that without a doubt the single biggest issue facing Iowa at this time is the impending budget deficit that by most accounts could top $1 Billion. Contrary to what some may be saying, Vander Plaats is not ignoring economic issues in his campaign. In fact during our conversation Vander Plaats went right after the Governor’s continued assertions that there are no problems with the state budget. Culver’s most recent solution to last year’s budget crunch was to use one time revenue to help balance the budget, clearly a solution that resulted from a lack of leadership. Rather than focusing on across the board cuts, Vander Plaats would utilize targeted cuts where essential services would be less affected than non-essential services.  Furthermore he has indicated that he would implement statewide government reforms with the goal of increasing efficiency allowing the state to get the best bang for the buck.

Vander Plaats also took aim at Governor Culver’s train trip to promote high speed rail service from Des Moines to Chicago. He stated that Culver can promote high speed rail all he wants, but the fact remains that he continues to ignore more pressing concerns such as the looming budget crisis. He also pointed out that by continuing to push for high speed rail at a time when the state is facing massive budget shortfalls is irresponsible further illustrating the failure of leadership in the Culver administration.

Our conversation next turned to Iowa’s business climate. As we are all no doubt aware by now Iowa has one of the worst business climates in the nation. Taxation and regulation of businesses large and small inhibit the engine that promotes economic growth. Vander Plaats feels that one of the keys to reversing this is as stated above, reforming Iowa government to run more efficiently and less obtrusively. The state government must tie this together with a more competitive, fairer tax rates, and common sense regulations in order to attract and encourage growth of the Iowa economy.

I asked Bob what were the common themes that he has been hearing around the state from the people attending his events. The number one issue that he mentioned was the lack of leadership at the statehouse. The Culver administration has , from all appearances, been AWOL on the issues that the citizens of Iowa care about. Whether it be the bottle bill that they tried to pass, the lack of courage on the Supreme Court ruling, the decrepit state of Iowa’s education system, or the denial of budget problems. As Vander Plaats pointed out during our conversation, Governor Culver seems to have adopted a modified form of President Obama’s campaign philosophy of “Hope and Change.” When it comes to the problems facing the state Culver appears to be practicing the philosophy of “Hope and Wait.”

What will Grassley do with health care reform compromise?

I have been wondering what Charles Grassley is doing in regards to his efforts with health care reform.  In an opinion piece called “The Grassley Test” I learned that he is the “GOP point man for ObamaCare.”

I wish I could find comfort in reading the article. I don’t.

Obama is out pushing his bill everywhere and to all the media that are only too happy to put him in front of a camera. And, we must get this passed NOW! All of this sounds so familiar from the shoving of the first stimulus package on Americans.

So, I am thinking what Grassley did with that vote….

There are numerous comments left after The Grassley Test article and I will share one of them.

Mr. Grassley is yet another moderate that may indeed sell out on his party. Kim, I admire your optimism that he will make the right decisions. But there really isn’t a bi-partisan solution here that the Dems would accept – so they have to rely on sell-outs…

The comment says a lot and confirms why I am so uneasy about what Grassley is doing in his effort for “bipartisan support.” I hope that Grassley understands that Iowans are once again watching and paying attention to his decisions.

It is a lot to take on David Axelrod, Chris Dodd, Harry Reid, and Obama.

The article I share concludes with:

“Mr. Grassley goes his own way, he may yet irk Republicans. But so far he’s serving as a good litmus test of how committed the Democratic majority is to working with the other side.”

Senator Grassley: Iowans are watching. “Irk” seems to be a bland word if you cave in to the Democrats on this one.

Let Freedom Ring for accountability from legislators

This morning on FOX News I heard Colin Hanna of “Let Freedom Ring” tell about the push to get Legislators to pledge to actually read the Healthcare Reform package.

I have done some checking into Let Freedom Ring and have learned that it is “a non-profit, grassroots organization supporting a Conservative agenda”.

When you check out the website you will see the Legislators who have signed the pledge so far. Hanna stated on FOX News that the Leadership in Washington, D.C. “does not want the American people to see this bill.” I take it we can’t count on Pelosi, Reid, Frank and Company to sign the pledge but I will be watching to see how accountable all Legislators will be.

I am certain that this is true. We aren’t to know how much the passage of this bill will cost us, that it will fund abortion, and who knows what else if we can’t read it.

I urge you to check out the website. Be informed. A portion of the website follows:

Hold your Senators and Members of Congress accountable for reading any healthcare reform legislation up for vote by having them sign our pledge.

So that all Legislators have ample time to review the pledge before encountering any publicity, we will not release the names of signers until Monday, July 20th.

By close of business on Monday, July 20th, we will release the names of those who have signed, those who have declined to sign and those who have failed to respond. We will then begin targeted publicity campaigns thanking those who have signed and taking to task those who have not.

“I want my Country back!”

If you want a jump start on your Monday morning, I have one for you!

Watch the video to see a Great American woman stand up at a Rep. Mike Castle Town Hall meeting to question President Obama’s birth certificate.

Listen to the passion that was used when saying the Pledge of Allegiance.

Being polite to our Congressmen (and women) does not seem to get the point across. While some might say this woman was rude, I say we are all being forced to  shout in order to have our voices heard.

This is my SHOUT of appreciation for all those who stand up for America.

More changes, more stress for Clarke County landowners

The title of a July 16 article in the Osceola Sentinel – Tribune reads More Changes Made to Reservoir Plan. It may as well say More Stress Heaped Upon Clarke County Landowners.

The article shares information that the Natural Resources Conservation Service is looking for alternatives to constructing a reservoir at the currently proposed site.

The calculation for water usage is now listed for a peak daily demand of 3 million gallons instead of 4.1 gallons as previously claimed. This recalculation could mean the lake size would be smaller and might change the location of the lake.

These additional changes “will set the date for construction back by four years.”

More years of fighting, spending money, stress and worry for those in jeopardy of having their land taken in the guise of water need. More years for the land developers to covet the land of Iowa citizens and want to take it for their own personal gain.

Clarke County landowners: please know that other Iowans near and far are watching your plight. We care about what is happening to you on a daily basis. One year or four years, we will add our voices to yours that in the end you will have the Life, Liberty, and Pursuit of Happiness that should be yours to live in peace on YOUR land!

Biden Alert ! Biden Alert !

The blundering disaster of  Vice President Biden has struck again ! This guy is self destructing worse than a tape from Mission Impossible! And pops up more than summer time thunderstorms do. I can’t wait to flip the news on each night to see just what this bumbling idiot has to say next. He said yesterday quote ” We have to spend money to keep from going Bankrupt” Wow! Really? Maybe thats what i should tell the Bank the next time im Overdrawn ! Im trying to keep from going bankrupt ! My Vice President says its ok works for him. I somehow don’t think the Bank will buy that from me. I’m beginning to wonder if hes not sent out there to say these moronic things to take away attention from what Obama is trying to sneak in the back door. If this health care bill is so important and gonna cost so much you would think there would be more time taken to do it  right ? My thoughts are  social security and medicare and medicaid are government run and are broke and soon will owe baby boomers about to retire i have heard numbers of 40-50 trillion dollars. If they  can’t run this  right, do any of you have any faith in Obama care ?   I sure the heck don’t. But go tell ole Joe to go out and take one for the O team and go make a total ass of yourself and it takes the heat off the chief.  Sort of like Bill Clinton when he was in hot Monica Lewinsky water so he bombed the heck out of a pharmaceutical factory in Sudan not to mention bombing the daylights out of Yugoslavia and Iraq. Obama has good ole Joe. This has to be the plan otherwise you think there would be some back shelving of him ASAP to shut up stupid comments like he has made.  Hillary Clinton sure hasn’t been seen much lately. For a secretary of state you sure haven’t seen much of her nothing like having Madeline Albrights ugly mug on tv every night. Keep tuned Ole Joe has got to be the most commical VP’s we have had in some time. Anyone remember Dan Quayle being ripped for misspelling potato? Yet hardly anything has been said about Joe’s idiotic comments. Oh heck its just Joe what did you expect.  According to the National Tax Foundation if Obama is successful with National Health care there would be 39 states that would have income tax rates over 50%. Obama is becoming one big arse mistake for America. So there you go spend the money before the people even take it home.

Fong, Branstad, oh my!

So last week I listened to GOP gubenatorial candidate Christian Fong be interviewed by Steve Deace. I was pretty excited when I heard he was going to be on after hearing a lot of hype about him. By the end of the interview I was cringing because of his awkward performance. Right now I feel a lot of people are pushing Fong just because he is young and a minority. As I’ve written before, the GOP needs to move beyond being seen as the party of old, white men and use conservative values to attract younger and minority voters. But, we can’t be practicing identity politics where we promote someone JUST because they are young and a minority and overlook the fact that they have little public policy substance or not enough government experience and donate money to liberals. Let’s leave the identity politics to the Democrats. That’s not to say I don’t admire Fong’s life story. It is very admirable. For an interesting take on Fong, go here.

Speaking of old, white men in the GOP,  former Gov. Terry Branstad is rumored to be considering another run for the governorship. At first I was astonished and then I remembered back to a couple of weeks ago when he was speaking  at the Ames Conservative Breakfast. All the Story County GOP party insiders were drooling over the the former governor like tweens at a Jonas Brothers concert. And nothing surprises me any more about the GOP here in Iowa, so Branstad running again actually makes sense now. The GOP’s strategy and thought processes are still stuck in the 80s so  leave it to the Republicans to re-nominate a 4-term governor who was elected in 1982. And since 1982 was the year of my birth, I dedicate this top hit from that year to Gov. Branstad for a little motivation should he decide to throw his hat in the ring.

My new hero Harry C. Alford takes on Barbara Boxer!

It has made my day to know that Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) got boxed around by Harry C. Alford, President and CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce. When Boxer would not be quiet Alford just continued to talk and not back down. I needed a hero today and I have one in Mr. Alford! Ms. Boxer must be used to having the last word and almost everyone’s expense. Not today.

Read the transcript below and I believe you will have a new hero, as well.

“Madam chair, that is condescending to me,” Alford said. “I’m the National Black Chamber of Commerce, and you’re trying to put up some other black group to pit against me.”

Boxer defended including the report, however, saying the report reflects a “diversity” of support behind climate change legislation facing the Senate. “If this gentleman were here, he would be proud he’s being quoted,” Boxer said in defense of the NAACP support.

Alford, however, struck back against Boxer, accusing her of “getting racial” in the climate change debate. “All that’s condescending, and I don’t like it. It’s racial. I take offense to it. As an African-American and a veteran of this country, I take offense to that,” he said. “You’re quoting some other black man — why don’t you quote some other Asian or some other… You’re getting racial here.” “You’re speaking on behalf of the black community?” Alford asked. “Why are you doing the colored people association’s study with the black Chamber of Commerce?”

He finally concluded:

“We’ve been looking at energy policy since 1996. And we are referring to the experts, regardless of their color. And for someone to tell me, an African-American, college-education veteran of the United States Army, that I must contend with some other “black group” and put aside everything else in here — This has NOTHING to do with the NAACP, and really has nothing to do with the National Black Chamber of Commerce. We’re talking about energy. And that — that road the chair went down, I think is God awful.”

Grassley, Sotomayor and eminent domain

Republicans on the Judiciary Committee attempted to press Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor on a variety of issues that were of interest to me. It was Senator Charles Grassley of Iowa who used a portion of his 30-minute allotted time to ask about eminent domain.

Grassley wanted to know when it is appropriate for the government to seize private property. The Des Moines Register’s article states that Sotomayor “steered away from Grassley’s question.”

For someone like me who has strong and passionate opinions about the government grabbing up private land, I appreciate that Grassley went into his line of questioning about a 2005 Connecticut case where the Supreme Court ruled against overturning a state law that allowed local governments to take private land to generate economic development and property taxes. This ruling set the stage for land grabs in Iowa.

Even with the Iowa Legislature attempting to strengthen Iowa’s eminent domain law the real threat of private land being taken for land development in Iowa is currently happening in Clarke County. Other Iowa counties have citizens who live under the threat of land grabs as well.

On the same day that Grassley was quizzing Sotomayor I heard a radio program that caught my attention. After doing some research I did find information about what is happening in South America. I share a portion of the article here.

Chavez’ so-called back-to-the-land movement calls for the redistribution of land — increasingly properties that the state has taken over in what officials term a “rescue” or “recuperation.”

“I say to all who say they own land: In the first place, that land is not yours. The land is not private. It is the property of the state,” Chavez said last month on an episode of his weekly television show broadcast from rural Barinas state, where he grew up.

Felicia Escobar, a lawyer and consultant on land issues who used to work for the Agriculture Ministry, said land redistribution has failed across the continent because farmers are not given incentives to produce and governments have not provided adequate credit or technical assistance. She said that in Venezuela, the new farmers are not even given title to the lands they occupy. In some cases, they are grouped into communes and expected to work as a unit, with little stake in their plots. “That is socialism,” she said. “It did not work before, and it does not work now.”

I realize that some reading my post will think it is a stretch to relate that what is happening in a far away place like Venezuela will ever happen in the United States of America. To you I say yes it could. In my wildest imagination I did not think that our President and others would be making such progress to distribute the wealth of Americans. Wealth to some is money. Wealth to others is their homes, their land, and their way of life.

Charles Grassley has concerns about the altering of the Constitution’s Fifth Amendment.

I join him in his anxiety about the government’s ability to seize private property. There seems to be so many issues to care about, be concerned about, and keep on the front burner of opinion. Easy use of eminent domain to seize private property certainly is one of them.
