Nightmare Before Christmas
When I went to bed last evening, I did so praying for a Christmas miracle this morning. I was hoping that enough US Senators would see the error of their ways. I was hoping that they would see the light of truth in regards to the health reform bill that they were set to vote on this morning. I awoke this morning to find that this was not the case. I awoke to find that the Democrat majority in the US Senate felt the need to unleash a nightmare on the citizens of the United States. This morning 59 Democrats and 1 Independent chose to present to us; the American population; a nightmare before Christmas.
As Iowa Defense Alliance has already pointed out our very own Democratic Senator Tom Harkin viewed the Health Reform legislation as a Christmas Present for the American people. I suppose that in his sick and twisted world view everyone that receives a Christmas gift must pay for it because we will have to pay for this health reform plan. And according to many critics on both the left and the right we will have to pay more for less coverage. Some Christmas gift Senator Harkin.
Then there is the case of Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson. Either this man is a master at extortion or he had a heartfelt change of heart. For weeks he had proclaimed that he would not vote for the health plan being discussed in the Senate. But Senator Nelson changed his mind. You see, Harry Reid included language into the health reform bill that effectively worked as a bribe. The State of Nebraska is set to receive millions of dollars in aid to help cover the increased costs of Medicare and Medicaid that the state will incur as a result of the Health Reform legislation.
If you would like some more proof that this bill was unworthy of passage just look to the media. Over the last several days the talk has not been about the merits of the bill, assuming there were any at all. Instead the media has been talking about the backroom deals that the Democrats have had to take part in to get the bill through the Senate. This bill wasn’t passed because it was a good decent bill worthy of passage. This bill was passed because corrupt career politicians got paid off. So now because of the political opportunism of a these narcissists the frustrated American public is one step closer to tyranny. For on Christmas Eve 59 Democrats and 1 Independent voted yes on the Nightmare before Christmas.

If this is such a good bill then how come they have to flat out bribe senators just to get their vote ?

It”s not the apocalypse, Al, so calm down. It’s either a small step to better coverage and cost control or it’s a small step toward funneling our money to corporate insurance companies against our will.
Mostly the press covers back room deals and personalities more than it ever covers the details of any bill. That’s why we need the internets —and bloggers!
Merry Christmas– and good health care to all!!

Wheres my health care card i got a hang nail i need to go to the ER

Your right Jerry, it is not the apocalypse. However the passage of this bill would force every American to purchase a service.
Furthermore the back room deals are precisely the reason why the Congressional approval rating is so low. The American people are tired of the arrogance displayed by the political class. And this bill represents that arrogance.
Comment by Al Bregar | December 24, 2009 |
Agreed—on both points. Lieberman and Nelson were especially self-centered arrogant asses. And mandating the purchase of a private product or service is a worrisome development. Let’s unite on the cure—Medicare for all! Are you in?
BTW, your headline for this post is a clever one. Congratulations.

I don’t see Medicare for all as an answer to our nations healthcare woes. I would rather see the industry freed up to utilize the profit motive for more innovation in the industry.
One of the problems in our healthcare industry is over regulation. Don’t get me wrong, I am not advocating that we should completely deregulate it, but we need common sense regulations. The prohibition on the purchase of health insurance across state lines has got to go. There is absolutely no good reason for it to remain in place in this day and age.
Another problem is that health insurance is no longer health insurance. It has become more of a health care prepayment plan which is much more costly than insurance. Just imagine how much your auto insurance would go up in price if you were to include your regular maintenance costs in it. We need to step away from this mentality so that more health care consumers can see where their health care dollars are going. I think you would see much wiser health care purchases.
And thank you for the compliment. I try to keep our readers entertained with my writing style. I am glad that you enjoy it. I hope you have had a Merry Christmas.

Do you prefer state regulation of insurance or federal regulation? Companies that want to sell in Iowa can do so now if they submit to Iowa regulation. I think they want to make sales without any regulation by “selling across state lines.”
Interesting point about regular maintenance costs.
Comment by Jerry | December 27, 2009 |
I will admit that is a sticky point. But at the same time the differences in regulation are mainly based on what the the coverage must cover. Which once again brings us to my main contention that the change in the American mentality has been behind the increased cost of health insurance. In fact I think that a fairly simple way to help bring the cost of healthcare down would be to bring health insurance back to what it once was. Coverage for catastrophic health care expenses such as broken bones or heart attacks. For the regular maintenance visits pay for those out of pocket or through a health savings account.

The single most grievous thing about the Obama/Democrat Health Bill in my opinion and belief is giving sanctity to abortion and forcing everyone to be involved in supporting it. Beyond that the entire bill wreaks of leftist ideology, corruption and an open gate to bureaucratic nightmares. It is and will be a bad bill in both philosophy and practical outcome.

Well the last thing the government de-regulated the telephone industry and cable tv industry sure hasn’t brought us cheaper rates my phone bill is higher than ever and if it wasnt for cell phones my land line can call the same distance it could in 1940 without long distance charges.
Comment by iowanforabetteriowa | December 26, 2009 |
Amen, Raymond!
Since I cannot legally pay for a hitman why is it okay for my tax money to pay for abortions?
Comment by All4Iowa | December 26, 2009 |
My 15 yr old cousin Courtney sure isnt happy that when she turns 18 her tax dollars will go to pay for abortions when she doesnt believe in them. Not to mention anyone else who is against it who will now be forced to pay for them. I think they better start building more prisons with the provision that Pelosi included in the bill fines and imprisonment if a mere 10% of the US population refused to pay there would never be enough prison space let alone the employees to run them. Oh maybe this is one of Obama’s job creation plans i broke out of the bag early ? Dont know but we will find out.

Seen on the news that there is a 40% tax on over the counter drugs in the bill. I use over the counter pills for my stomach so my Prilosec instead of costing $25.00 it will cost it will increase to $35.00 dollars so guess my option is to go see the doctor add on the cost of $100.00 dollars of a office call to get a prescription that will cost few dollars of copay that the tax payer will be forced to pick up when before i was buying it myself. That really works out well doesnt it. Thanks Obama. This will become the United States largest tax increase ever. You know i really wouldnt mind if it went to paying down our debt but we know it wont.Keep spending Congress and this will be the biggest banana republic the world has ever seen and our money will be worthless. Its getting there anyway.
Comment by Woodrow | December 27, 2009 |
Our money is in danger of becoming worthless. But that’s not due to govt spending. It’s due to imports. We have let the “free traders” of Wall Street send all our factories to China. Now all our money goes to China to buy radios and tires and steel and pretty much everything. We need our factories back!
Comment by Jerry | December 27, 2009 |
I must disagree with you Jerry. Our money is on the verge of becoming worthless because the corrupt politicians inhabiting the halls of Congress continue to spend our tax money long after it is gone. They no longer have the financial restraint to manage our nations budget wisely. The problem began under Bush, but has only intensified under Obama. We have had bailouts and stimulus that have had no effect other than to increase our national debt. There is no one party at fault in this case, both are guilty of selling our nations future to China. However, it is clearly evident that Obama is selling us out faster than Bush did.
Comment by Al Bregar | December 27, 2009 |
Even when we had a balanced federal budget under Clinton, our balance of trade was in the red. That’s what devalues the money: the constant buying of oil and cheap t-shirts made in other countries while exporting only a little soybeans to try to earn back some of the dollars we spent abroad.
Comment by Jerry | December 29, 2009 |
I agree with your assertion that the trade deficit has been hurting our nation. I have been on the frontlines of that battle having worked in numerous factories over the last 10 to 15 years. In my opinion the best way to tackle that problem is to make our nation more competitive. I know you won’t like to hear this, but we need to cut corporate taxes. We need to provide employers with an incentive to keep those jobs here in America.
Comment by Al Bregar | December 29, 2009 |
What will be do when it becomes worthless ? Buy the currency that the world replaces the dollar with. what will our country then use for collateral ? Only thing thats left worth anything is the land hmm who did this Germany in 1933. Our govt is printing money like its monopoly money to cover the spending. When you print trillions and trillions it makes it become worthless. I know one thing Jerry you better have plenty of gold and silver and guns and ammo things will get wild and hairy when it come apart. But By god we got health care which wont be worth a dam when no one can pay for it.
Comment by Woodrow | December 28, 2009 |
China warned they cant continue to buy our debt we cant continue spending trillions at a whack. But is congress and Obama listening Noooo Obama says we need to stop this spending but the things he is pushing for will only add trillions and with the difficult times we got we dont need to burden the people with billions of new tax burdens this will only tighten the strings of companies and will not help produce jobs what he has done will only cause more jobs to be lost. He is a total moron and has never ran anything he doesnt know what he is doing and any moron knows you cant spend yourself out of debt i sure would like to try if thats the case loan me some trillions !
Comment by Woodrow | December 28, 2009 |
If we didn’t have government debt for China to buy with its surplus dollars, they would buy corporate debt– or stock in IBM and GE, or office buildings and shopping centers, or farmland. It’s a lot simpler for them to just buy government debt.
The heart of the problem is that they have all our money. And that’s because our patriotic, profit-seeking corporations sent all our factories to China.
Comment by Jerry | December 29, 2009 |
It is more than just corporations that are sending our jobs oversees. It is also the consumers continuous search for products that cost less. Hence the rise of Wal Mart.
I have said it before and I will say it again. We need to completely reform our nations archaic tax code. We need to unburden the means of production by eliminating the income tax, the corporate tax, etc. replacing it with a consumption tax.
