Does Jim Gibbons Residency Matter? Yes.

Yesterday the Des Moines Register ran a story by Jennifer Jacobs confirming some rumors that had been circulating the 3rd Congressional District. For several months rumors alleged that Jim Gibbons, one of the candidates hoping for the opportunity to challenge Leonard Boswell, does not live within the District that he is campaigning in. And then in a follow up the Register’s political columnist Kathy Obradovich asks the question in her Iowa Politics blog, does Gibbon’s residency really matter in the race? I won’t rehash the information provided in the article, but I will explain why I think that Gibbon’s residency should and will play a part in the 3rd District primary race.

First and foremost, including Gibbon’s himself; there are seven Republican candidates that have filed the necessary paperwork to compete in the primary battle for the right to challenge Leonard Boswell. This is not exactly a shallow field. Surely there was one candidate that Gibbon’s could have thrown his support behind. The fact that he opted interject himself into the primary battle despite being a resident of another Congressional District leaves one with the impression that he is only running to assuage his ego. While I don’t know if this is true, it is the impression that one is left with.

One of the most important things that a candidate running for any political office must do is to build the public’s trust in the candidate. The fact that Gibbon’s had to be prodded by the state’s largest newspaper to acknowledge this information can and will hinder this action, especially when it comes to the general election. One of the biggest reasons for the Tea Parties and the anti-incumbent attitude permeating the nation right now is the our elected officials have violated the public’s trust. Now with the primary race heating up Gibbons will need to mend his image in the mind of the public which could be a time consuming effort that may even end up being a futile gesture.

You can rest assured that Leonard Boswell and the Democrats are now salivating at the opportunity to challenge Gibbons in the general. While he may mean well, he has provided them with some fodder that could be deadly for his hopes of a successful general election campaign. So yes I would say without hesitation that Gibbons residency does indeed matter.

Story County Supervisors 7:34 minutes

7:34 minutes.

This is the amount of time you will need to spend to find out how the Story County Board of Supervisors does business.

It was one thing to read about the 7:34 minutes in The Tribune and quite another to hear the audio tape from the April 15, 2010 meeting.

The Tribune says “The strife is palpable between Strohman and the two long-serving board members”.

Yes, the “strife is palpable”!  Jane Halliburton, James Strohman, and Wayne Clinton are caught in the act of strife (trouble, conflict, discord, contention, fighting, friction, dissension), and more!

This infamous 7:34 minutes will be a long lasting reminder that Story County deserves to be represented by a man like Rick Sanders.

The audio tape can be found on Sanders for Supervisor 2010.

Take a look at what Sanders has posted on his website:

In 2009 as we faced the worst economic conditions in a generation, the Supervisors raised our taxes $1.7 million

This year, the Supervisors once again increased taxes by over $800K!!!

Since 1986 – Property taxes in Story Co. have TRIPLED
(that is a 300% increase while the population of Story County has grown by only 16% – 74,000 to 86,000)

I suggest Story County residents go to Sanders’ website to read in detail what Mr. Sanders has to say about the current Story County Board of Supervisors and what he will offer as a member of this elected board.

And, for nonresidents of Story County: pay attention to what is going on with your County Board of Supervisors. Are they doing their elected jobs in highly functional, open, honest and ethical ways? Are they transparent and accountable to citizens?

Or, are they dysfunctional?

Story County and every county deserves to have a highly functional, responsible, trustworthy, and accountable Board of Supervisors.

7: 34 minutes.

“Story County needs a responsible change!”

Former Governor Branstad Issues Survey

Today I received a letter from Terry Branstad.

The former Governor sent me a “Key Iowa Issues Survey” composed of 12 questions that he wants me to check “agree” or “disagree.”

Some of them I will list here:

“The financial crisis is an opportunity to reduce the size of state government.”     AGREE

“Iowan’s have more government than they need or can afford.”  AGREE.

“The Iowa Supreme Court made a big mistake in opening the door to same-sex marriage and Iowans deserve a public vote.”

AGREE (with “big mistake” part of the question.)

Former Governor Branstad wants me to send $25, $50, $75 or other to help make sure his campaign stays on track.

“Running for Governor out of a sense of duty” does not inspire me to donate to this campaign.

So, DISAGREE.

The P.S. portion of the letter begins “I never imagined a year ago that I’d be running for Governor.”

Well, neither did lots of other Iowans.

The Governor believes that his campaign is “gathering steam and making steady progress every day”.

DISAGREE.

Tim Gartin for Iowa Senate

My family and I happily met up to watch the Veishea Parade and then fanned out in small groups to take  in some of the events and activities on the Iowa State University  Campus. It was a few hours of fun and pleasure on a beautiful Iowa day.

Upon arriving home I was handed numerous pieces of the same political campaign literature. My out of town children and extended family must have thought I would be interested in it and they were right.

The brochure was from “Gartin Iowa Senate” and it is a great piece of information that I will highlight here.

Tim Gartin is a native Iowan (a plus for me) and has practiced law in Ames since 1996. He is an ISU grad. (I hope he had some fun at Veishea, too!) Tim has a very nice looking family via the picture printed on the brochure. My adult children wanted me to know that a nice young man was handing out the literature so perhaps it was one of his sons helping out with the campaign.

Mr. Gartin points out in the brochure that the legislature “continues to outspend revenues” and that next year Iowa’s budget “faces a deficit of approximately $1 billion.” Gartin’s view is that “Iowa families must live within their means and so must our state government.” What a concept!

Next Gartin explains that the legislature is chasing business out of the state, that Iowa’s unemployment rate is the highest in 23 years and that “Forbes ranks Iowa 41st in the U.S. for growth potential.” This was new information to me and certainly doesn’t look good for the future of my children and grandchildren.

Tim Gartin then lays out what he will do for Iowa, and he gas a great plan:

What is needed: Government does not create jobs. People do.    I will work on tax and regulatory reforms which will promote the business climate.”

Now that I have a small collection of “Gartin Iowa Senate” pamphlets I will be sharing them with Ames friends and neighbors. I will be paying attention to his other views on issues important to Iowans and to me.

I also will be doing more research into Tim Gartin that I will share in future posts. For now, I will say that I am very pleased that the Republican Party has such a qualified and articulate candidate for the 23rd District.

Tax Day Des Moines Tea Party Rally

I am one of those Iowa “Tea Party” people and I have a sunburn to prove it. The discomfort of the sunburn is fading away but my reflections of the event on April 15th  just keep coming so I will write about it here.

Arriving early to the Iowa State Capitol grounds with my lawn chair, American flag, and camera, I found a good location to take everything in and enjoy the time of being with other Americans. Just as with the other Tea Party events there was a lot to see and hear. Passionate speakers, creative signs with to the point messages, awesome patriotic music and lots of “people watching” to enjoy. I did some networking and even met a facebook friend that I had only known via the computer screen.

As the afternoon progressed the speeches continued to be passionate and inspiring. I was very glad that I stayed until the last song: God Bless America.

Yes, there was a lot to see and experience. There were numerous Dave Funk supporters as evidenced by lots of people wearing Dave Funk stickers. There were Bob Vander Plaats supporters out and about. They were handing out literature, bumper stickers, and yard signs. I did not speak to him but observed many in the Tea Party crowd talking with Mr. Vander Plaats. It was great that he took the time to join the ‘party’!

What I did not see were any Terry Branstad supporters. Perhaps the former Governor had a prior commitment but I rather expected that his supporters or perhaps campaign staff would have made the effort to promote their candidate.

And, perhaps the Branstad campaign thinks that continually running a TV ad and making phone calls to solicit support will be what it takes to get another 4 years of Terry Branstad, Governor.

Perhaps.

Yet, from what I witnessed on a wonderful Iowa day, it was the grass roots Iowans who were putting their time and effort in for their candidate Bob Vander Plaats. They were making a statement about dedication and enthusiasm. Add to that, it was candidate Vander Plaats who took the time, interest, and energy to walk among the crowd to meet, greet, listen and care about what the voters had to say.

I will take up close and personal any (Tea Party Rally) day!

The Danny Carroll Before and After

After this hit piece appeared by Craig Robinson on The Iowa Republican regarding Iowa Family Policy Center’s Danny Carroll two thoughts immediately came to my mind:

1.  What the IFPC is doing is working and the party hacks are running scared of Bob Vander Plaats.

2.  The article accurately displayed who Danny Carroll WAS and that is member extraordinaire of the Republican machine.

My beef with Craig’s hit piece was that nowhere in there did it include anything about Danny Carroll between November of 2008 and today.  Somewhere in there Mr. Carroll left the machine behind and no one knows but him and his Creator what was in his heart during that time.  Craig so eloquently threw Bible verses around in his article but he forgot to mention the word repentance.  I might also add that Craig seems to think that all Christians should sit in a circle and sing Kumbaya together since our Savior came showing love and gentle guidance to all.  But did He?  I also remember this same Jesus flipping over the money changers tables in the temple.

I was going to write a post addressing all of this but I received a note from Danny Carroll in an IFPC email that says it all:

On Monday of this week, Republican blogger Craig Robinson wrote an article that detailed several things about my past political involvement. While he was making an obvious attempt to criticize, much of what he said was exactly right. Mitt Romney came to my farm and spoke at a fundraiser for my legislative campaign, as did John McCain, and Newt Gingrich. He neglected to include Terry Branstad, who also attended an event for me in 2008.

Craig rightly pointed out that I played that game — all the way. I was the conventional Republican; I played it safe and followed all the rules. I spoke up when asked, and kept quiet when told. I took the money from the Team Iowa PAC, which is funded in no small part by folks like Bruce Rastetter and Gary Kirke, as did every other Republican leader.

While I don’t recall refusing help from Steve King, as Craig claims in his article, that too would indicate I was playing by the standard Republican rules. You see, while most Republican insiders will say polite things about Representative King in public, they caution each other in private to be careful and not get to close to a firebrand who wears his religion on his sleeve like King often does. They are afraid that people might then think the entire party is lurching to the right or becoming too religious. Did I hear and listen to that type of “conventional wisdom” while serving as a loyal Republican soldier? Guilty as charged!

Steve King has taken a lot of stands that other political figures are too scared to take. Over the last several months, I have learned firsthand some of what he has gone through for those principled stands. We are all human, we all make mistakes, and sometimes we need to ask for forgiveness. I left a message for the Congressman yesterday afternoon, and look forward to letting him know that I have a new appreciation for the way he keeps fighting in the face of opposition, even when that opposition comes from political pragmatists like I used to be.

Still, Craig’s article begs the question, where did that get us? I know exactly where it got us. It got us bigger government, higher taxes, more Iowa babies killed in the womb, the teachers union running education instead of parents, and it got us a Supreme Court that thinks they can make law. It got us criticism from people like Doug Gross, Joy Corning, and their friends. It got us big money political elites that sit in the background and seemingly pull the strings on people like Craig Robinson.

They tell Christian conservatives to run along and play Sunday School and to sit in the back of the bus while the pros take care of the serious business of politics. They make their decisions based on polls and the amount of money a candidate has in the bank. They are happy to use politicians like pawns in their personal chess game, but when it comes time for a real fight they are AWOL.

On April 3, 2009 the political elites were nowhere to be found. When distraught Iowans came to the Capitol begging for a vote on a constitutional amendment, they were either gone or hiding behind their office doors hoping no reporter would call. When Iowans rose up by the thousands to push back against the Supreme Court, most politicians stayed at a safe distance.

People like Craig Robinson, who has for years made his living off of the political process, appear to be afraid that if Christians and principled conservatives refuse to participate in the system as it now exists, the gravy train will dry up. They want us to sit down, shut up, and go along. They want people to believe that the real political power is reserved for those who can get as close as possible to office holders and people with lots of money, because that’s the way it has always worked. Their system continues to enrich and empower them, if we all buy into the paradigm where everyone needs to angle for access to the political class, and they deternine who gets that access.

There is little room in the current paradigm for personal growth or spiritual development. There is little room for Christian values, convictions, or taking a stand for decency and obedience to God’s commands. Politics no longer has much of anything to do with justice in government or promoting righteousness. I believe George Washington was right when he said, “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensible supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism, who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness.” It makes me wonder if Doug Gross and Craig Robinson would have advised Washington to get his thinking straight, that it would be better to protect the status quo, and just get along with King George?

Craig also decided to quote scripture as a way to undermine the progress that has been made over the last several months. He likes Colossians 4:5-6 and 2 Timothy 2:24-26, and so do I, but he failed to contrast them with other passages like Matthew 10:34 and Matthew 10:22, where Jesus said, “Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword,” and “you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.”

Those who are married to the current political paradigm of pragmatism need to understand, we are fighting for a better paradigm and will not be deterred. We are fighting, first and foremost, because we understand that every human is an eternal being and that each one of us will answer for what we did and said in this life when we face Jesus. (Another Scripture reference that is worth a quick look is Philippians 2:9-11) We are more concerned about waking up Christians who have made, or are in danger of making, an idol of a political party, than we are about who will win the next election.

That is the whole point of everything the Iowa Family PAC staff and I have done and said regarding Terry Branstad over the last several months. While we don’t think that anyone needs to be governor for 20 years, we are more concerned with the fact that someone who ought to know better, would presume to employ political pragmatism at a point in history that demands bold leadership based on Christian principles. We have said all along that our hope is that Terry Branstad would have a transformational awakening and articulate an understanding of the failure of the past paradigm, along with a desire to honor God in every decision, should he find himself as Iowa’s governor again.

That is also why it is not hypocritical for me to say and do the things I have over the last several months. In fact, my background and past associations are proof that I know what I’m talking about. People who have participated in a failed political paradigm, and who have supported partisan politics over principled leadership, can change. I look at people like Terry Branstad and Craig Robinson, and have no hatred or ill intent, because I was once there too! I’ve come to terms with the way I used to be, and readily admit that it was wrong. Now, I’m sounding the alarm for other Christians who have allowed themselves to be misled, and am looking for political leaders with the guts to admit it’s time to change the way we conduct ourselves in the political arena.

I know some people don’t like what I have to say or the way I apply what I’m saying, but I did not pick this fight. Throughout history, Christians have often been forced to take a stand, and now is as good a time as any to step up and break with a system that has got us nothing other than bondage. Defending marriage is worth the sacrifice. Protecting the unborn, with more than token efforts designed to appease the populace and that still enables the abortion mills, is worth the sacrifice. Fighting to restore a society where families, churches, and neighborhoods care for the needs of others, rather than feeding an ever growing government, is worth the sacrifice. Abandoning the type of politics that elevates politicians and limits access to the process, in favor of a paradigm that honors God and empowers people, is worth the sacrifice.

The party-above-all Republicans can go ahead and do their thing, but they will not have my support. I have chosen my political hill to fight, and perhaps to die on. What is yours? Do you have a cause for which you are willing to die politically? Most liberals and moderates do not. For them it is mostly about money, power and control.

I believe people are looking for leadership that is based on time tested Biblical values. If people like Craig Robinson, Terry Branstad, or Doug Gross don’t like that, they need to tell us what their standard is. They should stop pretending like their system will promote people and policies that will honor a Biblical standard. They need to explain to everyone what their standard is, if they have one.

Iowa, Please Follow Texas’ Lead

Tax Day is looming tomorrow and you know what that means.  TEA PARTIES.  In light of that the state of Texas has had media attention, from Governor Mike Huckabee in particular, for their bold new initiative Contract with Texas which many Texas legislatures have signed.  Conservative legislators in Texas have banded together to form a new organization – the Independent Conservative Republicans of Texas which was founded by Senator Dan Patrick of Houston.

Our Contract with Texas

We give our word to stand for conservative principles
and to put people before party.

We give our word to be fiscally accountable,
limit the size of government,
and fight for free market principles.

We give our word to protect our borders
and to support a strong military.

We give our word to protect life, support strong family values,
and uphold the Judeo-Christian beliefs our nation was founded upon.

We give our word to defend the Constitution
and protect the sovereign rights of Texas.

I really like this contract and would love it if Iowa would do the same thing.  It would also be beneficial to the conservative movement if this contract went national and the Tea Parties got on board with it.  It is actually standards in simple terms that we can hold politicians accountable to and it covers ALL of the issues that are important to limited government and a free republic.

For more information on this movement Mike Huckabee will have the founder on his Fox News show this weekend.

I Googled Bob Vander Plaats and Came Up with…Rod Roberts??????

I actually stumbled on this finding about a week ago or so but I really didn’t want to have to confront it because it is very apparent that I have a soft spot for preachers turned politician.  I was doing some social networking and was very surprised to see a Google ad for Rod Roberts using the key words “Bob Vander Plaats.”  I found out from an insider that the Roberts campaign just recently bought those two key words and now the Rod Roberts website pops up first when Bob Vander Plaats’ name is googled.  When searching for “Terry Branstad” the Roberts website also comes up under those key words.  So far I have seen no other Iowa candidates use this tactic and maybe it is not unusual, but I believe it to be quite an interesting stunt for the self-proclaimed “nice guy in the race.”

The reason I am dredging this up now after knowing about it for a while is because I have been hearing more and more, especially after the gubernatorial debate, that Rod Roberts is running to be Terry Branstad’s Lieutenant Governor pick if he gets the Republican nomination.  I really hope this isn’t true but the Google stunt along with other things is leading me to believe it.

For instance, Roberts keep saying that people are hungry for a third choice in the Vander Plaats/Branstad race.  If this is the case, why wouldn’t they be searching for his name instead of either Vander Plaats or Branstad on Google?  Is this really the reason he is in the race because he hasn’t done much to define himself as to why he is the third option to the polar opposites of Vander Plaats and Branstad.  Roberts also says that he is the one who can unite social and fiscal conservatives but I have never heard him say why those two factions should and could be united.  Sounds like rhetoric from someone who is running for #2 and not the #1 spot because he knows darn well Branstad will need a miracle worker in the arena of social conservatives if he gets the nomination.  And if Roberts was really serious about running for Governor he would update his website more than a couple of times a month.  I know he is dealing with barely a staff and I will never ridicule a candidate for getting by on bare bones, in fact I salute it, but I believe updating a website is pretty painless and can be done by one’s phone.

I could be very wrong on my assessment of what is going on and I really hope that I am.  I would like to think that someone who held his seat in the statehouse for ten years in a Democratic district would not give that seat up in such a pivotal election year just to ride on what’s left of the GOP political machine in Iowa and join forces with Terry Branstad.  And if this is what is happening it is very dangerous to think what it would do to someone like Rod Roberts who could have a political career ahead of him but instead chooses to hitch his wagon to the old regime.

Republicans Need A Wake Up Call, Iowans Should Elect Vander Plaats As Governor!

The following is an editorial written today and submitted to every major newspaper in the state of Iowa  by Can-Do Conservatives of America founder Brian Donegan.

For far too long the disabled have been ignored by the Republican Party. There are exceptions: ‘08 Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee donating money to fight autism on the trail, South Carolina Lt. Governor, André Bauer vocally decrying the cycle of Governmnet dependency, and Governor Sarah Palin advocating for special needs children as John McCain’s running mate in 2008. However, when it was time to elect a new Republican Chairman in 2009, outreach to seemingly every group under the sun was proposed except the disabled by the candidates seeking the position that was ultimately won by the embattled Michael Steele.

Again the Republicans have left the disabled to be championed by the Democrats who use us as pawns on a political chessboard through government handouts that leave us tied to the ball and chain of dependence. It’s time for a change and that is why as a legally blind citizen I founded the Can-Do Conservatives of America, the first Conservative political organization representing the disabled. That is also why we have proudly endorsed Bob Vander Plaats for Governor of Iowa.

Iowans have a great opportunity to elect a leader as Governor who will not just fight to enable the disabled, Bob Vander Plaats will fight to empower us. With Bob as Governor, Iowa will be a shining example to the rest of the nation that the most vulnerable in society should be offered a hand up through policy instead of government hand outs that foster dependency. Bob’s inspiration to run for Governor in the first place is his third son Lucas who was born severely disabled and who’s story can be found in the book “Light From Lucas.” That inspiration was further stoked by the lack of leadership that he experienced as an appointee to former Governor Branstad’s administration while being ignored by the bureaucracy.

The Republican Party deserves a wake up call on June 8th. Republicans and Conservatives should no longer take the disabled for granted as definite Democrat voters. They should reach out to us through the Conservative Reagan model of coalition building. Bob Vander Plaats is doing just that and that is why Iowa Republicans should nominate him for Governor.

Mike Huckabee’s Web Team Joins Chris Reed’s Campaign

Christopher Reed, 2nd District Congressional candidate, has become a client of LCM Strategies who was the mastermind behind the online campaign organization of Governor Mike Huckabee’s 2008 presidential bid.  Huckabee shocked the nation with a second place finish in the Republican primaries and had one of the strongest online operations in the field.

This is the press release.

LCM Strategies Joins Reed For Congress Campaign Team

Chris Reed for Congress announced today that LCM Strategies, LLC has joined the campaign team and will help manage the overall online marketing efforts. LCM is a nationally recognized leader in the online marketing and strategy field.

Chris Reed, Candidate for Congress in Iowa’s 2nd District, said that “the experience that LCM brings to the table will help our campaign maximize fundraising, improve message distribution, and utilize new media, including social networking at this crucial time of our Primary campaign.”

LCM has a long list of successful clients, including former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist and Mike Huckabee for President. Reed went on to say that “our team is excited and energized about LCM coming on to help with our online efforts. I am pleased to be working with such an experienced web team and am glad to be part of their client base.” In addition, LCM also currently manages the online efforts of Huck PAC, Congressman Dave Camp and Congressman Marsha Blackburn among others.
