Iowa Right to Life Book Sale Spring 2009

iowa-right-to-life-imageA great number of Americans support the cause of pro-life. I count myself among this throng as I despise the destruction of human life for no other reason than convenience. Many of us do not have time in our busy schedules to support organizations that advocate for the elimination of legal abortions in our land. The Iowa Right to Life Committee has created an event in which pro-life advocates can support the cause without the necessity of rearranging busy schedules. That event is one the Iowa Right to Life Booksale held twice yearly.

The first day of the sale is the only day that admission will be charged, after that admission is free with book prices ranging from $.25 to $5.00. All proceeds from the sale will be used to help expectant mothers and pro-life pregnancy centers around the state.

The schedule for the book is as follows:

Thursday March 26 – 9AM to 9PM

Friday March 27 – 9AM to 9PM

Saturday March 28 – 9AM to 9PM

Monday March 30 – 9AM to 6PM

And evidently IRTL is still taking donations for books. If you have any books that you would like to donate or if you would like to volunteer to help out at the sale please contact Rhonda Phillips at 515-205-8024. Please take the time to support this worthy and unfortunately necessary cause.

Rest In Peace

I just learned that former Iowa Senator Mary Lundby passed away this morning. I wanted to take a moment to extend condolences to her family. Her long running battle with cancer should be an inspiration to all Iowans. For even in the face of impossible odds she never gave up. May she rest in eternal peace in heaven.

Holiday Mail for Heroes

I have been hearing about “Holiday Mail for Heroes” and decided to post information on IDA about this kind and caring opportunity. One million pieces of holiday mail is the goal. December 10 is the deadline for a postmark on what you would decide to send.

Holiday mail program for servicemembers under way

The American Red Cross is sponsoring a national “Holiday Mail for Heroes” campaign to receive and distribute holiday cards to servicemembers and veterans both in the United States and abroad.

Holiday Mail for Heroes, which began Tuesday, Veterans Day, is a follow-up to the 2007 effort that resulted in the collection and distribution of more than 600,000 cards to hospitalized servicemembers. This year’s program will expand its reach to not only wounded servicemembers but also veterans and their families. The goal is to collect and distribute 1 million pieces of holiday mail.

“As we enter this holiday season-a time to celebrate with family and friends-it’s important to remember the thousands of men and women who serve our nation in harm’s way and those who are recovering in military and veterans hospitals,” said Army Col. Norvell V. Coots, commander, Walter Reed Health Care System. “The Holiday Mail for Heroes program is a wonderful outreach effort and a great way to acknowledge the sacrifices of our men and women in uniform.”

Holiday cards should be mailed to:
Holiday Mail for Heroes
P.O. Box 5456
Capitol Heights, MD. 20791-5456

All cards must be postmarked no later than Dec. 10. Cards should not be mailed or delivered to Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

For more information, visit www.wramc.amedd.army.mil or www.redcross.org/holidaymail for Holiday Mail for Heroes program guidelines.Walter Reed is not accepting mail addressed to “A Recovering American Soldier.”

The Folded-up Flag

Today is Veteran’s Day.  A day in which all veterans should be honored, both living and deceased.  The best piece of advice I got growing up is that whenever you see a person in uniform or know that a person has served our country, you should go up to them and say “thank you”.  I will be passing this this advice along to my children as well, because I believe it to be very important to recognize those who fight for our freedom.

I am a child of a veteran of the Korean War.  My dad served in Korea and he didn’t have a choice to enter the military, but the people today do.  They willingly go to defend our country.  My dad wasn’t a parent yet when he was drafted, but a lot of men and women today are moms and dads that choose to leave their families behind to face the unknown and go to battle for complete strangers.  They are putting their country ahead of everything and everyone else in their lives because they know it is the ultimate service they can provide to secure America for their children and their children’s children.

My dad lived well past his service in Korea, and at his funeral men in uniform played Taps and folded up the American flag that was draped on top of the casket and presented it to my mom.  No words can describe the amount of pride that I felt as that ceremony took place.  Not only do I want to say thank you to all of those who have served our country, but I also want to thank their families as well.  Thank you for supporting the decision their loved ones have made to protect us.  Hopefully the folded-up flag for families will not happen for a long time yet, but when it does, cherish it and know that it represents a sacrifice for freedom.

Some Thoughts from IDA on Election Day

I see on other blogs that there are predictions for the election from the top of the ticket on down to the bottom.  You won’t get that from us here.  Our members are working the polls, sitting in bomb shelters, still throwing out a few Hail Marys, and one left manning the blog……me.  So, I thought it appropriate to give an election day thought from our members.  A post that states a view from all of our members hasn’t happened here yet due to the fact that while we all have the same goals, we go about achieving those goals in very different ways.  But the thoughts I will leave you with I am pretty sure all of our members can agree on.

As I voted today in a line of people and as I have been sitting watching the TV and the steady stream of voters in other states, I couldn’t help but get a little teary-eyed at the thought of what a great country we live in.  A country where WE get to pick our leaders and the will of the PEOPLE overrides all other voices.  (Although, a few courts need to be reminded of that, but that is for a later time.)  What we have here is what other countries can only dream of.  Another awesome thing?  I can sit here at my computer and I can type whatever comes to my mind with no fear of being arrested and I can openly thank God for this great country that we live in.  I also don’t want to forget all of those men and women who have died for us to keep these freedoms.  What a true gift to be an American………life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Books For Soldiers

Thanks to Art over at the Conservative Reader for making us aware of this noble cause. Books for Soldiers is a non profit that provides books and reading materials for our serviceman oversees. Unfortunately, according to Art, this worthy program is in trouble. They have been unable to raise the amount of money needed to prolong operations. So if they do not receive this funding they will shut down by December 1st of this year. Please make a donation to this charitable organization. Please help them continue to help out our soldiers who put themselves in harms way so that you don’t have to.

The unknown holiday: U.S. Constitution Day

I regret to admit that my focus on the U.S. Constitution has been very lacking. And I admit that I sadly did not participate in celebrating U.S. Constitution Day. It was unknown to me. It will not be next year.  Watching an ABC program that highlighted the lack of knowledge Americans have in regards to the Constitution as they are soon to vote in the next election has given me a shove out of my complacent life and prompted me to search out information on the U.S. Constitution. I found the article below to be interesting and even thought provoking. Perhaps you will take the time to read the article and join me in the quest to remember what we learned about the Constitution in a long ago Government class in high school. Many have suffered greatly to protect the Constitution. The least I can do is work to be a lot more knowledgeable in what the Constitution says and does for American citizens even today.

A Salute To Our U.S. Constitution
By Chuck Baldwin
September 17, 2008

On this date in 1787, the U.S. Constitution was adopted. 39 delegates from 12 of the 13 colonies (Rhode Island did not send a representative) affixed their signatures to the greatest civil document ever conceived by men. Famous patriots such as George Washington, Roger Sherman, Alexander Hamilton, Benjamin Franklin, Robert Morris, Gouverneur Morris, James Madison, George Clymer, and Abraham Baldwin were among this gallant group.

Under divine Providence, it has been allegiance to the Constitution that has preserved our liberties and protected our very way of life. Most of the problems, failings, and frustrations that plague our nation today are due to the propensity of our civil magistrates to ignore or blatantly abuse constitutional government. Accordingly, fidelity to the Constitution would likely repair most of the damage done by this neglect.

It is the responsibility of a free people to jealously guard the principles upon which their liberties are predicated. For citizens of these United States, the principles that duly protect our liberties are contained in the U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights, and Declaration of Independence.  Therefore, it is incumbent upon every American to studiously familiarize himself with these documents.

Furthermore, it is the duty of every American to stubbornly hold their elected representative, at every level of government, accountable to his or her oath to the Constitution. The U.S. Constitution is the contract that every civil magistrate makes with “We the People.” Failure of an elected representative to fulfill that oath to the Constitution should be met with swift and certain rejection by the people at the polls. Nothing else should matter. Republican or Democrat, man or woman, black or white, believer or unbeliever: it is the responsibility of every civil magistrate to submit to the restrictions and instructions of the Constitution.

Our Constitution (along with the Bill of Rights and Declaration of Independence) was formed, framed, and founded upon the eternal principles contained in Natural Law, which proceeds forth from man’s Creator and Redeemer. No people in human history have ever been so blessed as the people of the United States to inherit such a legacy. Such a heritage serves only to heighten our own responsibility, as “unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required.”

On this Constitution Day of 2008, may this generation of Americans live up to its responsibility to valiantly bequeath to our posterity the same legacy of freedom that was so bravely and miraculously bequeathed to us. For the sake of freedom, for the love of our children, and for the safety and security of our republic, may each of us determine for ourselves–and commit to Almighty God–to “preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

Quote of the Day:

“Americans just want us to… not be concerned if they can be constitutionally justified… Why, if we had to do that we could not pass most of the laws we enact around here.” — Sen. John Glenn

Subject: The Unknown Holiday

Today is Constitution Day. Few Americans know this. Neither banks nor government offices will be closed. And most of us will go to work today, spending nearly half our time laboring to pay taxes to the various levels of government. In this sense today is no holiday at all. It’s merely a designated spot on the calendar during which Americans are to . . .

Do what?

The politicians won’t take notice of the day, though we’ve joined with the Liberty Coalition to encourage McCain and Obama to discuss Constitutional issues on the campaign trail. We won’t be holding our breath in expectation that they will do so.

It remains to us, as individuals, to do something meaningful with the day.

We should be mindful of the role the Constitution has played in the success of our own lives. We live the freest and most affluent lives of any people on the planet, or in history. Our Constitution, which is now the oldest governing document in continuous use anywhere, has been crucial to this outcome.

The Constitution gave us a system of government with divided, competing, and explicitly defined powers. It gave us a Bill of Rights with strong limits on government action. The politicians have waged a continuous and largely successful assault on these attributes of our Constitution, but even so, the Constitution has continued to protect us often enough to make it one of the most important, if unappreciated, contributors to our daily lives and personal well-being.

It’s easy to forget, overlook, or disparage, the number of times the Supreme Court has declared some act of Congress or the President as un-constitutional. But it has happened often, and has served to preserve our freedom and prosperity. In this we see not only the genius of the separation of powers, but also the continuing efficacy of the Bill of Rights. Without these attributes of our Constitution we would be not only less free, but also more poor.

Likewise, it’s easy to under-appreciate the number of times Presidents have vetoed some over-reaching act of Congress, or times when Congress has acted to curtail the power of the Executive. Likewise, the Senate has often blocked actions of the House, and vice versa. And we have also been served when there have been partisan divisions between the Congress and the White House.

The separation of powers works. The Bill of Rights works. The Constitution works.

Look around the world. Wherever governments have less power, and the people more freedom, affluence, security, and peace reign. And wherever governments have more power, and the people less freedom, misery flourishes. And for as long as we have been the most free people in the world, we have also been the most prosperous and secure.

In America, even our poorest citizens live as kings compared to much of the rest of the world, and few of us need fear a policeman’s knock on the door in the dead of the night, or that we will disappear into some camp or torture dungeon.

All of this, and more, is primarily a gift of our Constitution, for without it the people would long ago have voted their freedom away, and/or the politicians would have quickly assumed absolute power. A strong case can be made that only the Constitution has prevented these outcomes. So, today . . .

Ask not what the Constitution can do for you, for its gifts have already been conferred upon you in great abundance. Instead, ask what you can do for the Constitution. We would submit that you can, and should, speak up strongly on behalf of the Constitution’s preservation. Please remind Congress that . . .

* Today is Constitution Day
* That they swore an oath to serve, protect, and defend the Constitution
* And that you would like to see them take concrete action to honor that oath, on today of all days

You can use your personal comments on two important campaigns to make these points to your elected representatives. First, ask them to pass the “Enumerated Powers Act,” which would force Congress to specify their Constitutional authority for every act of legislation. You can send that message here.

Second, ask Congress to repeal previous egregious violations of the Constitution. You can do so by asking your representatives to co-sponsor Congressman Ron Paul’s “American Freedom Agenda Act.” This bill would . . .

* Repeal the “Military Commissions Act of 2006″ and thereby restore the ancient right of habeas corpus and end legally sanctioned torture by U.S. government agents
* Restore the “Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act” (FISA) and thereby outlaw warrantless spying on American citizens by the President of the United States
* Give Congress standing in court to challenge the President’s use of “signing statements” as a means to avoid executing the nation’s laws
* Make it illegal for government agents to kidnap people and send them abroad to be tortured by foreign governments
* Provide legal protection to journalists who expose wrong-doing by the Federal government
* Prohibit the use of secret evidence to label groups or individuals as terrorists for the purpose of criminal or civil sanctions

The death of a school- New Market, Iowa

A sad, sad event has happened in Iowa. I do not want it to go unnoticed. Thus my humble post.

A school died this past year. New Market Elementary in New Market, Iowa. A small school in a small town.

So this fall, there were no teachers in their rooms, carefully and creatively putting up bulletin boards.

No Welcome Signs for the students or names waiting on a desk for a student to sit down.

No brand new box of crayons to await little hands to carefully remove them from the box so that an awesome piece of art work could be drawn.

No custodians shining up the hallways.

No scent of school lunch wafting through the halls.

No sounds of children as they walked down the halls to go to art, music, PE and recess.

And, speaking of recess… the swing sets blow in the wind, empty without students to see how high they could pump. No sounds of children playing, no teachers watching over the playground, ready with a hug or a solution to an argument. No need to blow the whistle.

No one to wear New Market Minor colors. No PTO carnivals, parent/teacher conferences.

No big yellow school buses filled with happy children.

The sights, sounds, smells and heart of a community is gone.

The doors are locked, the desks are sold.

It was just one school.

No – it is more than a school that died. It was a way of life for teachers and staff. The death of a place for children to learn, to play… to be.

Just little New Market, Iowa you say?

Yes, but tomorrow it could be YOUR school.

Iowans, in this election year, please pay attention to education issues.

Bigger is not always better.

It is the heart and soul given to a job that makes the difference. New Market teachers had a lot of heart and pride in their small school.

I did not attend New Market School, my children did not go there.

But on this beautiful fall day, as I sat in my yard, I could hear the sounds of children at play in a school yard near by and I thought of New Market… and of other schools where there are only the sounds of silence.

And I am sad.

This post lovingly dedicated to the teachers who taught through the years at New Market School.

Don’t Forget What Happened

Boy time sure does fly. It is hard to believe that it has been seven years since our nation was attacked by cowardly jihadists. It was seven years ago today that thousands of Americans died because of the radical Muslims of Al Qaeda. But this isn’t post isn’t about matters military. And I definitely don’t want my political views creeping into this post either. I simply want each of our readers to take just one moment of there time to remember these men, women, and children who lost their lives on this day seven years ago. I would like you to take the time to remember the heroes who so valiantly threw themselves into the hell that was the World Trade Centers. I want you to remember those heroes that paid the ultimate price. Remember the heroes that tried to save the lives of the people in the towers only to sacrifice their own lives.

Here is a video tribute that I want you to watch. After watching it, answer me this question, have you forgotten?
